So I picked up a complete engine late last year and was planning to just drop it in the car n get it running again. Well I finally got the space to do it all so I get the motor on my stand and was going to put all my accessories on the engine before I installed it into my dsm. Well while it was on the stand I decided to go ahead and throw a the extra set of arp head studs that I have as well as new timing belt, tensioner, the two idlers and new waterpump. So once I got the plastic timing cover off I noticed that the tensioner arm was bent and not pushing up on the Lil arm that turns the idler and puts pressure on the timing belt.

So once I got the head off it appears that the pistons have a little damage from coming in contact with the valves.

So here is a pic of the intake side of the head. Some valves are not seated and I'm not sure if any are bent.
Gonna disassemble the rest of the head and see for any other damage. I'm also going to pull the rods/pistons out and check the rod and main bearings.

The only reason I bought the engine was because I was told that it was in running shape. I could spin it over freely and I pulled the valve cover off when I looked at it and everything look good. I pulled the oil pan also and there was no metal or anything on the oil pickup or anything so I assumed I was in the clear.

My big question is how could the tensioner rod get bent like that. I'm just wondering if this happened while it was in the car and how?? Or did they try putting a new tbelt on and screwed up. But nothing looks new at all.
I'd say it valves are definitely bent. Don't think I've never seen valves mark pistons like that and not be bent. But I guess nothing is possible.

Your last picture is way too dark to make any ruling on the valves. I will tell you this though, if the valves contacted the pistons and it left marks, they're bent. It looks like your pistons will be fine, I would run them no questions asked. The tensioner was loosened up and it was out of alignment with the tensioner arm when it fully extended. From there it looks like instead of being reset it was just cranked back down. I have no idea why anyone would do that, but then again if that was acceptable to the previous owner its no surprise the valves are bent.

the last picture shows the light coming in around the valve because its not seated. Thats the #3 intake side.

Im going to do the fluid test tonight. Hopefully i can pull the funds together and buy mikes head. That would def be the better bet for me to do. but i do have a block im going to get with you about in the next few days
