I believe my front seal is going away, I have oil that I thought was from the tranny and now I know that it is not the case.

Can the seal be replaced in the car or does someone have a better suggestion?

It can be replaced pretty easily. Remove the timing belt, and crank pulley. From there you can pry it out and tap a new seal in. If there is oil on the timing belt you will want to replace it.

Inspect everything since your there, such as the oil pump gasket cheap insurance if it is leaking from that area, be careful putting that seal in no need to tap it too hard.

How would oil from the tranny get anywhere near the front main seal??? Are you talking about the rear main seal? The rear of the engine is the tranny side. The front of the engine is the timing belt side.

Can you clarify which seal you are talking about?

Exactly.

Front of engine = timing belt/oil pump/oil filter side
Rear of engine = Transmission side. Pull the trans off to find the Rear main seal.

It helps to think of it how a longitudinal engine sits in a car; trans in the rear, timing in the front.

I am mistaken, it is the seal between the tranny and motor

I was looking at a old post and some how came to the conclusion that is was the front seal which I know is not correct. Thank you for the follow up and pointing out that I had made the wrong description.

thank you again

For the rear main seal, you will need to drop the tranny, t-case and oil pan. There are 5 bolts that hold the rear main housing to the block after the oil pan is removed. Remove the bolts and it should come off. Swap the seal and use a new rear main housing gasket and some RTV to seal it back up. Make sure to clean all surfaces before applying RTV.
