So I'm going to do a rebuild on my car. I spun a rod bearing. My questions are
1) am I missing anything that I should look at having him do
2) does this look like a fair price

Seems a tad high.. unless cleaning the block includes R&R of freeze plugs and oil galleys $40 to clean block only)
grinding the crank in my area is about $75.00
block bore is $60
Deck block $50
CBN mill head is $40
Align hone is about $125

That's what I thought, unfortunately it's one of the only good machine shops here. Thanks for the input guys. I'll see if I can locate another shop locally because shipping to and from is just not going to be an option

Personally I dont think its that bad. Its a little more than what I paid but prob only by a 100 bucks or less. Machine work is like most things in life, you get what you pay for. It may be a little high but If its a quality job i wouldent worry about it to much.

Why are they align honing the block after a spun rod? It is only necessary if you spun a main, are installing arp's, or they are just out of spec. From my experience, i have never had to align hone a block that didn't have any main bearing problems. The rest of the prices are a little high as noted. I pay 30 to clean, 50 to bore and hone, 50 to deck the block, and 30 for a head re-surface.

Some things are high, others are low.

Something to note is that prices will vary greatly depending on geographic locations. It's going to be impossible for you to compare prices in Montana to prices in Florida. Prices in Kentuky are going to be different than prices in SoCal. We run into this problem all the time when a customer wants to compare individual prices with another shop across the country. Rent, utilities, taxes and overhead are different across the country. Find a reputable shop that you trust. You cant put a price on piece of mind.

Something else to consider is the quality of work. There are shops that do quick, cheap work and service places like dealerships and repair garages. This is completely different than a shop that is familiar with what it takes to build or machine a high performance engine. The latter is going to take more time to do the job right and pay attention to all of the details.

Yeah those are a tad high I wouldn't pay more than 50 for cleaning unless they're replacing the freeze plugs in that process. I paid 120 bucks around me to do a valve job and surface and that was a 5 angle valve job. And replaced a few guides.

im very happy with my machine shop been going there for many years they take their time, and do very good work never an issue with my engine, and very fair prices.

Yes I only spun a rod bearing (#3 to be exact), The reason I'm having him align hone is because yes if an installing ARP mains.
The guys have been around for longer than I've been alive. They are quick, yes a bit pricey according to you guys, but are great quality for the reviews in Billings, MT.
Bogus, I believe he did say something about the oil galleys at least, also when if asked him what procedure they use for decking the block and and head yes he uses the proper procedure. After he told me, it was like he'd read my mind "a don't use belt sanders"

Thank you Bogus, I will make sure to do that. I also have to find where to rent a torque plate, he does not have torque plates.
I'm also very sorry about my bad typing. I'm doing this through tap-a-talk and my fingers usually go faster than my eyes.

Thanks for the advice guys any other good advice you can offer is very appreciated

I am pretty sure that dsm graveyard has a torque plate you can rent.

Prices for machining look good. Remember that the biggest difference in prices is that they are only of the only shops in the area versus a 100 shops in Miami or Los Angeles...

We are pretty competitive with pricing and also include torque plating for FREE.

at one of the shops here its $350 for complete machining and assembly

I paid $890 for my machining, balancing and cleaning/magnaflux of the crank and block. It just depends on location, reputation and so on.
