well the first thing we need to know, what is your budget and what are your goals?
there will be alot more you need than a turbo and a set of pistions.

I know you probably have already heard this, but I will say it again because it has some merrit. Depending on how much you are willing to spend you may be able to get a boosted 1G. I've seen them advertised on my local craigslist for as low as $1600-$1800 consistently.

well, you will have to rebuild the engine for turbo use, get a Turbo ECU and harness, fuel injectors, and probly some more stuff, just to get to "stock"

You may be better off to find a turbo car to start with and go from there.

On the 1g, with the exception of the 1.8 motor, the 2.0 N/T and the turbo motors are the exact same. I had them side by side. The pistons are a lower compression on the turbo, but that dont mean anything. My first 1g I was a 92 GSt. I also had a 1991 N/T motor that I rebuilt with forged internals. During deconstruction of both motors, the blocks were exactly the same. The N/T would be able to handle a 13g or 14b with modest boost. Anything further would require a rebuild.

I dont see any harm in rebuilding it for boost. WHo cares if you can find a turbo 1g for the same price?
The stock turbo 1g doesnt have a newly rebuilt motor normally for the price.

That being said, is it a 7 bolt? If so I would find some evo 8 or 9 internals...500whp reliable and lighter than most aftermarket forged solutions. Dont forget you wont have oil squirters, but thats arguably a good thing. I love me some evo parts.

OEM mls headgasket/stock rod bolts is probably good enough for what your trying to accomplish. I would go ahead and get a timing belt kit of course as well as new water pump (napa and parts dinosaur have the cheapest decent ones) and an oem oil pump. Get a balance shaft elimination kit as well.

There are some special tools you will need as well.

The long bolt for timing the motor or a 6 inch c clamp to compress the timing belt tensioner.

Some feeler gauges for measuring piston ring gap

Piston ring grinder

Piston ring compressor

Decent torque wrench

Valve spring compressor for OHC motors(If you rebuild your head)

Rod bolt stretch gauge

Valve Lapping tool(If you rebuild your head)

I may be forgetting something but thats most of it atleast.
