What do you guys make of this? Engine was only idling from cold for about 5 minutes. After I drove it around for a bit, the noise subsided considerably at idle, but that weird high pitched whirring sound still occurs at 3+k rpm. Car runs well, I'm just wondering wtf that sound is. I also removed both PS and alt belt just to check and no dice.

Are you sure your crank pulley isn't contacting the timing cover?

How's the TOB?

You can put a broom handle or shorter piece of 1"X against various engine points and pinpoint the noise.

You guys can't hear that clunking sound before I rev the engine?

After this Sunday's meet, I'm going to pull the timing covers off and check to see whats going on. I've always set the timing myself and verified via rod gap and all that jazz, so I don't think it's too tight (but to be thorough I will check again). I'm also going to pull it off just to make sure the timing cover just isn't being stupid and making contact on the inside.

More or less, my main concern is the clunking noises. I have ross pistons (PTW: .0055") and my PTW clearance is .006", so I'm wondering if it's just a case of piston slap on warm up. I'll be sure to take another video of it warm when I clean her up tomorrow.

Old thread, but the timing belt can't be too tight unless the tensioner is completely bottomed out, and you'd have to be a real asshat to pull that off. We do not have any control over the actual tension of the timing belt. The term "tensioning the timing belt" is comletely inaccurate, but it's what we call it. We're really just setting the position of the tensioner piston at rest.

Did this motor use the 90 style straight cut gears in the oil pump? They whine like a supercharger and freak people out.

I just had to bring this thread back form the dead..
I'm having the exact same problem with my car.. DId you find out what was causing the whine? Was it piston slap? I would have thought the sound would be more of a clunking rather than a whine... I've replaced almost all my timing components and the whine is still there....

1st and only answer I have ever heard for this problem...I searched for 2 years....

I do have a question about this though...why dont the 90's make the whine?
