[RESOLVED] helicoils

anyone ever have a helicoil strip i was changing my manifold and what the f#*$ one starts striping.......so i take the mani of and helicoil and put back and another one stripped...... anyone ever have this problem The insert looked like regular metal when it strips......

A Heli-Coil looks like a spring with a diamond cross-section. No grasp-o "regular metal".

i know what they look like but my question is does anyone make a cheap version with inferior metal? i myself didnt install these because i bought the head built but on my previous head i installed helicoils and this never happened. now the hole is too big for the next size up tap and the next size up helicoil will probably snap the aluminum. will i have to take the head to the machine shop to get the hole refilled or does anyone have a solution that i havent thought of?

I don't quite understand what you're saying? Is there a stripped helicoil in there or is it a stripped OEM thread and you want to helicoil it? There are definitely 'off brands' that are available that are the same as a helicoil kit and I've seen them sold at pepboys and other auto stores.

Might want to check into time sert. I use these exclusively and they are 10x better than a standard helicoil

Thanks for the advice guys i took care of the problem by refilling the holes with aluminum at the machine shop and then got them tapped and helicoiled. As for the time serts i will try those if these ever give me problems....Got my new setup bolted on and ready to go
