When I am finished with this project (if that ever happens) my goal is to have a reliable and fun mid to low 13sec street car. This is how I would like to accomplish that. I will use a 6 bolt stock bottom end with only the balance shafts removed, mild ported 1st gen head with stock valve train and 5spd cams, stock intake and throttle body, ported 2nd gen exh manifold, 20G turbo, 550cc injectors and a Haltech E6K (already installed). I will also use a 5spd tranny with some form of LSD.
I chose the 20G based on everyone's suggestion that the extra lag time will help with traction, but I will drive this car everyday and don't want too much lag time. Anyone have a clue as to how much lag time I am looking at. I am also told that I will need to run an external wastegate. Is this necessary? BTW: I will be using the RNR racing 3" turbo back exhaust system.
Will the 550cc injectors be enough fuel? I know there is a math formula but can't seem to find it. I don't want to run any more than 80% duty cycle. I also have the 255lph hp in tank pump and adjustable fpr. Is this enough fuel pump?
If anyone has any experience with this combo or any of its parts please let me know what you think about them. Thanks again guys.

Steve

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that important point. I was looking at the Road Race Engineering fmic. The price is really low and I know it is not as big as most others. Is it big enough;) and is it any good? Thanks for your help.

20G needed for 13's in a FWD?? OUCH. IF that's your turbo of choice, I would be shooting for mid/lo 12's. With a bone stock motor, small 16G, I was able to run 12.80@109 on my FWD, and that's with 90psi in #3. You should concentrate more on the suspension than the hp with FWD. I was able to pull 1.98 60' on nothing more than KYB AGX (rear only) and Green dot retread tires.
As for the supporting mods for the 16G, they were: fmic/afc/550s/2g MAS/3" exhaust, etc.

good luck,
Mike

Mike, Thanks for the info. My goals are for mid to low 13's. If I come home with a 12 sec time slip, it will take days to wipe the smile off of my face. Anyways, I don't mind going faster. I picked the 20G based on everyones recomendation and don't want to have to run the turbo to its limit. Any idea on lag time with a 20G?

My friend went 13.40 on his 91 fwd with the stock turbo, IC, fuel system, etc. NOSLO2PTO is correct. Spend your money on suspension and sticky tires. Why in gods name waste so much money. Once you get low 13's on the factory turbo, etc then start upgrading as needed. And a Haltech to run 12's let alone 13's.... your a glutton for punishment.

Why is everyone against the Haltech? I have it installed in my car as we speak and drive that very same car everyday. I always maintain no less than 19mpg and at times when I am easy on it I get 24mpg! My car starts/idles/drives just like the stock ecu and my interior is not cluttered with various piggy back devices. Did I mention that I installed and tuned this myself.
Your friends time on a stock turbo is very impressive. It is always good to see cars with soo little mods going so fast. But he is one of the few that I hear running that fast with what he has.
As far as the suspension goes, I too have KYB adjustable shocks at all 4 corners with Eibach springs and upgraded sway bars. Sticky tires can be purchased at any of the 3 local speed shops in my town.
BTW, do you know your friends trap speeds when he ran the 13.40?

I am glad to hear you are having success with the haltech. It is a great unit.. I use one myself. Most guys that jump into a standalone dont know what they are getting themselves into, obviously you know what you are doing.

My friends car trapped 104mph. Nothing too impressive but typical of 14b AWD traps.

I'd have to agree :) My Haltech is great.. The only "slight" pain is the startup maps.. or lack thereof :) I left my ecu and 2 piggybacks a while ago and Im not looking back. All on a 99 stock 7 bolt bottom end with 40k of punishment and perfect compression still. Are you running a knock sensor?

13's should be more than achievable on a 20g. Your gonna see some massive top end power with that combo.

I went [email protected] with my 90 Laser fwd, with 15psi, KN filter, dejon intake pipe, dropped exhaust running open stock downpipe. Other than that it didnt have crap for mods.

Im building the new combo now which I think will go 120mph on a b16g, and small amount of spray. Car will be light, around 2400-2500.

If you do chose a 20g.. 660's 2g mas, and 255hp would be a good setup, A hacked 1g mas would work good but drievability of the 2g mas is alot better from my experience. I would recomend a spoolinup fp reg also, my stock reg was gettin overun by the 255hp bigtime.

Good luck
Allen

You should definetly be into the 12's with that set up on drag radials. On street tires I would think you should still be able to get into the high twelves if you get a decent launch and you won't spin out much until the turbo hits. IMO

Alright, thanks everybody for all of the help. StockSpyder: I don't run a knock sensor, just an egt and the good ole reliable A/F guauge. Are you using the E6K?
One question that nobody has answered: will the lag time with this 20G be too much to be a fun street car? Thanks again everyone for the help.

Steve

Actually I think your car will be crazy on the street because everytime you hit it in first, second or third gear all you'll see is smoke from the front tires.:D Also on the highway you'll woop up on anything. Good Luck

Just asking as I dont run a knock sensor either.. Yeah Im using E6K. I had a frank2 on my spyder when it was fwd.. lag isnt much at all and its comparable to 20g

How well did your car run with the frank 2 and fwd? What was your combo? Thanks again
