www.DSMlink.com says you'll need a laptop with a serial port (RS232 or DB9) running windows 98. The serial port isn't a problem because you can find USB to DB9 cables all over the internet. And I love windows 98, I'm still using it on my desktop in my apartment at school. What I'm wondering, and I only want to hear from people who are running DSMlink, is how much power does the laptop need? I'm trying to spend as little as possible on this. I hate laptops and it will only be used in the car to run dsmlink. Is 333 mhz enough? I can't remember what it is like to use a computer with that little power. Chime in with your low end laptop specs and your opinion on running dsmlink with it.

I'm putting my order in on Tues and once I become a member of their usergroup they can probably provide a lot of information on this topic. And I'll probably be borrowing a friends laptop for a little bit, but I could use your assistance now.

And I'm ordering a whole lot more than just dsmlink so don't bother telling me I don't need it.

Thanks,
-T

I run a 200Mhz with 128 megs of Ram Win 98 and it is more than enough. Some people run as low as a 75Mhz. Ask the guys that run the company they will tell you above 133Mhz you should be ok. It does not use too much CPU power, I think the memory is more important for the application.

i used to use a 100mhz laptop with dsmlink.

I'm currently running DSMLink on a 100Mhz laptop with 32MB RAM. This is noticably slow, but it still works fine, and I was able to tune out some high RPM knock earlier today :) I ran it briefly with 16MB RAM a while ago, and that was horribly slow. If I accidentally opened two copies of the app, the computer would sit for several minutes churning away.

I'm going to switch this laptop out for one that's at least 300mhz and has at least 64MB RAM - if you go for that or higher, you'll have no problems at all.

Thanks for the information guys. I won't have everything ready for another week or two, but I'll look for a laptop with at least 333 mhz of processing power and 128 mb of ram.
