I installed a 1g throttle body on my 2g a while back, but now I have to pull the head off to change the head gasket and I want to put in arp head studs. I have a 1g intake manifold sitting in my garage, but I realize the runners on the head are much smaller than those on the manifold, which is why I never installed it in the first place. Now since the head will be off anyway ... can I take a die grinder or dremel and portmatch the runners on the manifold with the head? I just want to have them kind of funnel from big to small on the head so where the gasket sits the intake manfold runners and head runners are the same size, but they get smaller once you go farther into the head. Is this safe to do? I figure I might not gain a lot of power, but it definitly won't hurt right? Since I'm not going to completely port the runners there won't be uneven airflow right? Thanks.

you'd be better off doing a 1g head swap then. just go to the local junkyard and get head. if you have the entire head off already, it would be the better alternative to porting the 2g head

As stated above a 1g head would be your best option, but it's also much more expensive and labor-intensive. You should have no problems if you port match the head to the intake, as long as you keep it smooth, which I assume you will. You should notice a slight power gain too.:dsm:

That's all I am going for ... it's basically something to do because the car is off insurance for the winter and it would be basically a free mod. I won't have uneven airflow as long as I only "funnel" the runners and don't port them all the way through right? Or even then it won't hurt since the valves will still only open for a certain time interval??

I would suggest doing the 1G head swap because you get so much more flow over the 2G. If you have someone knowledgeful about DSM's in the area I would suggest getting some help and doing the swap yourself. Otherwise, Herostar is right, it's going to be lots of labor costs..

Is the 1g 7bolt head the same as a 1g 6 bolt head? Or is a 7 bolt engine considered a 2g engine? Just curious for this swap he wants to do would it have to be from a 90-92 or would any 1g head work?

Any 1g head will work. The 93-94 heads are actually the most desireable because they have slightly better water cooling passages
