I'd like to make my own FMIC kit. Has anyone done it? For example, I would like to buy one of those universal FMICs off of ebay and make my own piping from scratch. Is there a good IC to do this with? Any if there is can someone give me ideas on how to run the piping??? I made my own 2.5 piping for the MKIV sidemount and I don't believe that this would be that much harder.

Thanks

I was planning on buying a mig welder pretty soon. I could weld aluminum with that. Are you referring to welding 3 or so stock 1g ics together? I was thinking of just making the piping like I did for my MKIV ic and finding a cheaper core (I want one like the IRC street core).

I'm really new to the welding thing. I was told that you could mig weld aluminum w/ an aluminum reel?

You can weld aluminum with a mig, its not show qaulity and require special gas/spool, but its plenty effective.

I ran 12.6@111 on 2 smic welded together on stock injectors, no fuel control and a 20g back in the day. it is an effective method and the entire setup was ~200 bucks.

I have a pte 50 trim w/ a .76 hotside sitting in my room. Right now I have a supra smic installed on the car which is probably just about as good as 2 smics welded together. I was planning on running the 50trim w/ the mkiv ic but I have a little more money to spend and If I could get a fmic and make the piping for a total around $600, I want to do it.

Hell yeah it's cool looking at it, but it would be much nicer if it wasn't 20 degrees outside so I could put it on and drive it!!!! Man that thing was much bigger and heavier than I expected, it's a badass paperweight for now

keep in mind that you will have clearence issues with the E housing and the lower water neck. I called up hahn and got a .500 mani spacer plate and long arp studs. even with the spacer plate it just cleared the lower water neck. other solutions are a non turbo water pipe. for ME the spacer plate just made sense. The plate never leaked so all the leaking spacer plate comments are a myth.

My 2g never crankwalked, so all the 2g crankwalk stories never really happened.

As for it clearing, I've had a few clear in mine, you just need to rotate the comp housing.

You can rotate the housing until your arms falls off. The E housing is not going to clear the lower water neck. If you rotate it far enough so that it does you will have your compressor outlet directly in the rad fan.Crankwalk has Zero to do with a freaking manifold spacer plate leaking or not. Awesome comparison:rolleyes:

Crankwak was a metaphor for you using dumb logic...Just because it worked for you does not mean it works for everyone

And actually, I do recall I did grind one of the comp housing bolt areas down a bit to fit...but it was not exceptionally hard.

Wonderful

Then don't say you JUST have to rotate the housing. when in fact you have to rotate it and grind the freaking housing down. Dumb logic or stupid incomplete misleading posting in your part.

i thought these things were supposed to bolt on?? haha oh well.

Will it fit w/ the non turbo water pipe?? If so, what's the mitsu part #...

This is exactly what I did last year. Ended up being around $675.
Heres a link from DSMtalk showing my install... FMIC

How do the 1gs do w/ the inlet/outlet on the bottom/side of the IC? Can I run piping just like you did on a 1g? Anyone know about this?

I've been looking into this myself. I posted a while back on making my own when i found this core made for a saab.

My Post

Let me know if you end up trying something.

I don't see why you couldn't do a similar piping route. Once you pull the front facia off, you'll see what you have to work with. ;)

I think I'm going to buy the large core now. Seems the people who bought this cooler are happy with it.

You can get the intercooler from me! My freind is starting a buisness called Pressure treated performance, and he is already makeing buchur-style street cores(ours is better b/c it has 11 rows compared to buchurs 10) for 400$. It is 3.5inches thick, but i am weighting for the other measurments b/c we sell them faster than they can produce them. It sends the in and out through the hole at th eside of the radiator. Check out the street core on buschur's site, because that is what you will get, but for 250$ less. All intercoolers are brand new aqnd pressure tested to 50psi. Another thing is that our inercoolers use thicker aluminum for the end tanks so they wont blow apart at high boost. I sould have pics up in a week, my scanner is ###. Let me know if you are interested.

I would be interested but I already picked an IC up.

$285 is a hell of a deal that I just couldn't pass up. I'm not afraid to mess around w/ routing the piping and stuff.

I talked to someone who is running the core who upgraded from the supra smic, which is the intercooler that is currently on my car. He seemed to be happy with the intercooler and his only complaint was the difficulty and custom work during the install and custom piping.
