Seeing More Boost Since Repair - Will 13 Psi Cook Something?

I'm seeing what looks like 13psi Boost on my stock boost gauge. It will hold right on the 1 in the 14 when cruising at real high speeds & when ran thru the gears at 5500 - 6000 rpm or so. Needless to say it runs GREAT & purrs at 800 rpm in idle.

This is a change since I replaced a bent #1 rod & put in all new 1G pistons (it was pulling about 11psi before that repair - still ran very good).

My only Mods are:
- balance shaft delete kit
- a gutted Cat
- No evap canister & associated purge lines.
- no EGR & associated lines.
- no vacuum lines going directly into the top of the Throttle body (all capped of course.
- Turbo vac lines are stock.
PCV & Valve cover vent stock.
Base timing set very conservatively - probably 4 BTDC (spec is 5)
Runs at 7 BTDC when Timing connector is not grounded (spec is 8)
using 93 Octane here in S.C.
I have no AFC, etc... but it may be time...

The $3000 question is will this 13psi cook something? Knock sensor is brand new - I THINK I saw some fuel cut in third gear at 5000 rpm when I floored it all the way & quickly rapped it out hard to 6500 in first & second. It just hovered at 5000 rpm.

I hated to put this in the Tuner Forum being I'm not running any AFC.
Thanx in advance for any advice, Buck

You may have a little bit of a leak from your boost source to your wastegate actuator, or maybe the actuator's just wearing.

It's normal to get more boost out of a healthier engine - it's producing a better burn on your air/fuel mix, thus creating more exhaust gasses to spin the turbine, etc.

It's amazing to compare the factory gauge to a real guage.

For example, when I have -20 on the real gauge, it says -7 on the factory gauge.

When my real gauge says 0 I can have -4 or so on the factory gauge.

And, when my factory gauge reads 13-14 (as high as it will go) my real gauge only reads 10 or so.

Probably the same thing that happens with yours.

Thanx for the correlation Robvas - I hope it only is 10-11psi - damn this thing runs good! When I get a "real" gauge I would like to run both gauges as you do & tee off the same source if possible.

... as long as it is REALLY 13 PSI. Get a mechanical boost gauge, the stock ones are pieces of shit.

so does this mean i have a problem when my stock gauge over a VERY short amount of time slamms as far up as it can go and stays there until i get out of it? LOL

yes im in he market for an aftermarkt gauge,, any ideas on which one i should get? also very had to hook one up?

Thanx

Isaac

That's a problem - you don't know WHERE you are once you've pegged it - & from what the guys say you don't know where your at with a stock gauge period - but at least I'm not pegged - pegged is definitely NOT Cool!

i know it goes like hell once it is pegged LOL so i guess it means it's got boast LOL, i dont know that all the components in this car are stock,, i just recently bought the car, im fairly new to turbos, and dsm's.
just about done with all the free mods, so im asuming the engine is indeed stock due to the fact they wernt done. i dunno.

DO NOT buy a VDO boost gauge, mine was $25, but it is junk. The needle sticks and the needle isn't steady. Definately more accurate than stock but not worth risking the bad tuning. I'll probobaly buy a autometer soon. Good luck.
