I got a 96 Talon TSI (FWD) and it crankwalked, so now I have to replace motor. Right now I just got everything unhooked, from the top of the engine compartment and the axles. The only thing holding the motor and tranny is the 4 mounts. My question is which way is better to get this engine out? because i have another engine waiting to be attached to my tranny and then dropped in. I have a engine crane, but i can only lift car about a foot and a half off the ground. Should I drop the tranny then pull motor or pull both at the same time. When I was looking at just droppin the tranny 3 out of the 4 mounts hold it in place. So any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

ya 3 will hold it, and u can keep it together and pull it all out at one time and all back in at same time, at least thats what a friend told me he did

you are going to have clearance issues trying to leave the transmission in place on the 3 mounts and taking the engine out.. There won't be enough room for the pressure plate to clear the bellhousing on the transmission. Just take it out as one whole unit.. Hook up the engine hoist, unbolt the mounts. Drop the transmission side down slightly to get the pulleys on the front of the motor to clear, and lift.

I just pulled a motor on a 95 talon tsi fwd last week, You will be better off leaving the tranny bolted to the block. when doing it like this when you hook up the cherry picker you will hook the chain to the hook next to the timing belt near the p.s pump. then hook the chain to the trany mount on the right side of the motor leaving quite a bit of slack. what you will have to do is let the motor tilt almost at a 70 degree angle to make the tranny drop below the frame and it will come out that way. I did the one at the shop from start to finish in an hour and 53 minutes.

Should I remove the charcoal canister or is it not in the way, and how big of a chain should I use. I have a 5 foot chain, Do I need longer?

5 feet will be plenty (as long as it isn't the cheap kind that is going to break under load... ). But yes, good luck, it isn't hard, but do label everything before you unhook everything.. You might think you can remember where everything goes.. But after the engine is out, and you look at the mess left.. you quietly think to yourself... "oh man.. there sure are an awful lot more wires then I remember seeing with the engine in.)

Can you give a specific bolt to use to pull the motor and tranny out on? I have been looking and it looks like their all to small, and is the bar going across under the tranny in the way when you dangle the tranny on an angle to wiggle it out?

Yes, the crossbeam will be in the way.. take that out as well. I believe its 3 bolts. As others have said, taking the motor out with tranny is a much better idea. Once you unbolt everything you'll have to angle the tranny as stated earlier in this thread, but after you get the right angle, it's rather simple to remove..

to pull the engine and tranny through the top at the same time, i have a 94' fwd 5 speed non-turbo,, but im guessin here probably isnt many changes.
I simply dissconected everything, pulled the axles, and hooked the chains from my over head crane in my shop, up to the mount on the exsaust manifold and the one on the intake, and tilted it as i pulled it al up and out, pretty easy.

What makes things go heck a lot easier is to take all mounts off the engine and trans. That way you won't catch on anything when puting your engine back. After you tilt it alot and drop it in put on the mount that goes by battery. Pull the motor up and straighten it out. Install front mount. Then put the cross beam back in and lower the engine. With little tilting timing belt engine mount should align and then get underneath a car and do back mount.

Some motors don't have the intake manifold bolt to pull it out. If you are having problems finding bolts. I used the mount just above the exhaust manifold that comes off of the block, and then attached the other end to the left transmission mount. Unbolted the mount from the frame, and just used the mount as a hoist point.
