ok i know you can have the balance shafts 180 degrees out of phase.

i just had a shop do my timing belt and new head because my tbelt stripped, it sounds like my balance shafts are out of phase cuz its damn loud, and ive had it happen 2 other times

my question is, if the balance shaft sprocket mark is lined up, is it possible that its still off, i remember reading something about you have to line it up and then see which way it turns when you let it go or something

i dont know about the balance shaft being out of phase but im sure teh oil pump spoket can be out of phase there is a bolt where you put a scrwe driver and feel it with.vfaq

Exactly, it's the lower BS driven off the oil pump that's usually out of phase since the mark on the oil pump sprocket can align with the timing mark and have the lower BS be in the wrong position.
That's what loreak is thinking about. If you go back and look at the timing belt VFAQ the normal and quick methods are documented.

thats exactly what i wanted to know, i was pretty sure you can have it out of phase even with all the marks lined up correctly

well on my way to my friends house all of a sudden all my oil blew out from under my tbelt cover somewhere and is all over my wheel and under the car and even on the back wheel

im towing it back on monday

What to you do make it in phase is this:

You line the mark on the oil pump sprocket straight up. Let it go, if the mark goes down to the left, you have it in phase. If if goes to the right, spin the sprocket 360 degrees and try again. It should now fall to the left.
