opened air canister

alright i have so many ?'s sorry just trying to learn, i read on one of these threads that its not good to hack the air canister off like most of you do due to the heat, and making the intercooler work harder to cool the air, well he said stock intercooler which is what i have. I noticed today my aif filter it self was pretty hot and figured that aint good. What do you think if i managed to get more outside air into it. Is it work alot of work or not? thanks ken

Alot of folks (including me) just removed the air can altogether to allow more air into the filter... BUT, as you found out, this lets very hot underhood air into your induction system. I noticed my 92 TSI AWD would lag a bit on hot days, especially at low speeds. I decided to redesign an aircan so it's only open on the front side. Then I added 4 sheet metal "sides" to the can so the only air that reached the filter was fresh, cool air through the holes behind the headlight. To improve this flow, I also cut one of the holes bigger behind the headlight, and ran a 2.5" duct from the main lower "air scoop" where the oil cooler line meets the oil cooler. I used the old air snorkel from the original aircan to make a kind of scoop to funnel a little more air into my duct.
I've got some pics of what I came up with; I'll try to get them posted as soon as I get the film developed. It's not some anodized G-Reddy stuff to impress the honeys, but it works great!
