After a month of hunting around for an oil feed/water blockoff kit for my SCM61 from PTE, the damn thing is bolted up, water has been blocked off, and return line has been connected. My question comes with an oil feed source.

I have 2 friends who are very DSM educated, with conflicting advice.

One says the hex plug is the best source, as its high pressure and freshly filtered, and seems to be the safest for the turbo.

-HOWEVER-

One says that the pressure coming from that plug is too extreme for the turbo's seals and will blow them out. He suggests a feed off the cyl head right by the OEM feed.

Should I put a filter on the cyl head feed, or is there a way to regulate the feed by the filter?

LMK asap , I'd like to do it tomorrow...

Anyone know what precision reccomends? I coudn't find it on the website....I sent em an email but being Sunday......

Thanks for the advice, the plug next to the filter (looks like 3/8npt, hex head) is the one, correct?

Subject: SCM61 Oil Feed Source...

I recently purchased an SCMxx for my 1990 Eagle Talon-my question: What is the best source for an oild feed, off the cylinder head next to the factory oil feed, or near the filter?

The head is a 20psi at idle to 40-50 at higher engine speeds, but has gone through the entire engine...

The oil filter would be at 100+psi constantly (turbo seals?) but is FRESHLY filtered.

Just looking for advice...thanks in advance. Most kits for the conversion include a line and fittings to go by the oil filter, I don't wanna waste the seals in my new $1k turbo....

Sean,
Without a doubt, the best source is near the filter. You will not have enought volume off the head and this will cause the turbo to fail and void the warranty. Also, do not use a restrictor. Hope this helps.

For warranty purposes, do it exactly like they said, and save a copy of that email. For everyone else, that is complete BS. the STOCK oil feed comes off the head, and the stock turbo lifespan is VERY LONG. if there was "not enough volume coming from the head", do you think they would have built the cars that way??

I have my t3/t4 oil feed coming straight off the head from the factory location.

My turbo is not water cooled either. Being water cooled or not water cooled will not affect a turbo in the same way that lack of volume will. Starve the bearings for even a short amount of time and the turbo is toast. I have absolutely no doubt that the way my turbo is setup will last quite a while.

Exactly my reasons for asking them...if the seals blow out due to too much volume/pressure I have their instructions in writing.

My major concern with going off the head was that I plan on destroying(SCM61@25-30psi with at least a 140 hp direct port shot) my 4g63, and I know there is a good possibility of some shrapnel flowing through the head....thus through the turbo.

Thanks for everyones input and suggestions...

People seem to run the oil both ways. Most instructions I have seen have people coming from the filter housing. I have also seen oil lines from the head with an inline cartridge style oil filter. I have seen blown seals from both configurations so I guess I would go with whatever the manufacturer suggests and that way you have some hope of a warranty claim.
