I thought about posting this in the general area, but with all the other posts I saw in there... it didn't look like I'd recieve a usable answer.

I bought a 1991 Talon AWD project car a couple weeks ago for open tracking and I'm not at the point where I need to choose a block to go with. The car came to me with only a head, tranny/xfer case, IM and other little things... so I'm having to go from the ground up.

Not far from me someone has a 4G63T long block for 350. Local to me a scrapyard has a good 4G64 longblock (I even saw the thing run) for 200. It didnt matter which block I chose I was going to put rods/pistons in it obviousy ... so thats a non-issue.

Which would you guys pick, and why?

At this point I'm so undecided I've thought about tossing a coin. I'm not looking for huge power numbers (350-375 would be fine with the ability to hit 400 if need be). I wouldnt call this a 'budget build', but I'd like to save money where I can and not needing an expensive snail would be one of those price points that might be eased with a 4G64.

Thank you for any feedback, and if I posted this in the wrong area I'm sure someone will slap me in the mouth.

Stick w/ the 4G63, it would be more than adequate for your power goals. Magnus Motorsports does offer a 2.14 liter motor which could be another good option to go w/.

Your in the perfect position to build the 2.4. Only costs a couple hundred for the pistons. Which you save by buying the short block. Everything else is the same cost, some blocks may need to have some deck holes plugged or drilled depending on which block you get. What is it that the RX7's, Honda's and all 4 cyl. cars lack? Torque down low, under the turbo. And torque is your friend.
