T.O.,
91 Talon AWD Turbo:

The question boils down to which turbo to buy: small or BIG 16G.
I know, I know...there's plenty threads on this...and I've read them all (almost).
The facts:
-basically same size...except for slightly bigger wheel on the BIG...therefore, more flow of air at high boost (above 20 psi)
-supposedly, spool-up characteristics are the same? (not sure on that one)
-and, the small more efficient under normal boost...but, bigger wheel better when runnin high boost,
-AND lastly....the smaller's better for an auto?? How so?

I've read everywhere, the pros and cons between the two...and honestly, makes it very hard to choose......so....my setup:
-550 injec/250 fuel pump/2nd gen ported man/ported O2 housing/ 2.5 FULL exhaust/air intake mod/mild cams...and super AFC later...all on 14psi and 94 octane
Oh yeah.....its an AUTO! BUT...with shift kit and torque converter is on its way...

Now....rather than your opinions, just hit me with the facts (the more, the better)
You DSMers are known to be the most informative than ANY other import forum
(pat yourselves on the back...I quoted that from Import Tuner/June edition)

With that setup....am I capable of safely running high boost?? (No engine mods...yet)
All in all, which turbo to pick? Small...or BIG?
Forget about the 20G...T28....I'm seriously focusing on the 16G only.

Thanks a lot guys...looking forward to your feedback...

Umm WTF? The big 16g is already too small a turbo. Getting a small 16g over a big 16g might be one of the dumbest ideas ever posted.

GUTSI,

Forget the old school "big 16G", they were slightly better on paper, but no one actually ran faster on them than on the plane "small 16G".

I would get ether the "small 16G" or the new "EVO 16G".

For the price, the small one seems to make the most sence right now, because everyone is running out and buying the EVO 16G.

But, when you get right down to it, performance between all of the 16G's will be roughly the same.

Your right that no one seemed to run faster at peak performance, but in my experience the Big tended to perform better on most cars. The small may have have had better pressure ratios that made it perform at high boost comparabe to a B16G, but the big tends to make a bit more power in general. IMHO.

This is rampant speculation and I stand by nothing I've said. I just have like Big.

I've got an auto just like you with a very similar setup (shift kit is getting installed today!), I opted for the S16G because, for 1, I am never going to be running more than 20lbs, 2, it will spool slightly faster than the B16G with the auto and 3, it's efficiency range is stellar at lower boost (14 - 20psi).

Can you read?? Obviously not...but not to worry....your local community college has ESL classes for people like you....why dont you register??
OMG

Now....at the bottom of my post, I specifically mentioned I'm ONLY going with a 16G...whether big or small.
Go to the track Sean (but have someone "read" to you the timeslip)....there's plenty guys clearing low 12 sec. passes with either turbo...
I just wanted to make a conscious decision and BTW, thanks to everyone else for their input...much obliged ;)

Hey...has anyone heard of "Darkside Racing)?? Ever ordered from 'em?

I can read fine, and Im saying getting the smaller 16G would be a stupid decision. Just because they have both done around the same thing on race gas in fully tuned cars does not mean their equal on the street. The spool difference is negligible, so goe with the bigger compressor. And I small, say 10 degree, clip.

Darkside Racing rip people off from what I've heard...There's been a ton of bad things from a ton of different people...

u buying brand new ones or used? if ur buying a brand new one, why not take advantage of the evoIII ones that are on sale by both FP and Slowboy. bigger flapper, less chances of boost creep. Also, i had a buddy, similar mods to me, except i was 5-speed and he was auto, he had a small and i had a big16g, i creamed him. could be cuz he's auto. Anyway, they all perform pretty close to each other so just get whatever seems to be the better deal. it's not like a night and day difference like comparing a 16g to a 20g, ur talkin pretty minor stuff. You'll be happy with whatever u get.

Agreed, 12's on a 16G is not a problem.
