Exhaust and Turbo, how much s/b done at the same time?

I've had very little downtime recently, but with Summer drawing to an end, I'm looking for a project for this fall/winter...

The thought I have is that I'd like to go with an exhaust upgrade on my Talon. I particularly like the setup shown on the 1g exhaust upgrade (this site off the main page), as it looks reasonably simple and straightforward, plus I don't need to be heard a mile away once the new exhaust is in the car.

That being said, I'm also guessing that at time of exhaust installation would be a good time to look at a Turbo upgrade/manifold upgrade or replacement/wastegate/o2/etc...

I'll be the one to worry about $$s and what I choose to do at the time, but given the notion that I'd like this to be a streetable 300-350 HP car on non-race gas, any thoughts as to what would make sense to undertake at this time? I.E. upgrade all at once, or are there stages this can be split into, and if so, what makes best sense.

Thanks in advance

Well I have a 2G so bear with me here...

I did my cat-back first. Now, I wouldn't say this was the smartest thing to do since it was a huge outlay ($650) for a Tanabe that would later have problems bolting up to a high-flow catalytic converter. I went 5 months on this set-up noticing a small difference in power.

Recently I purchased a downpipe (dp) and a high-flow cat from Road Race Engineering. I liked their prices and their reputation. Their dp is a bit different than most because it starts out at 2.5 inches and then expands to 3 to meet up with the high-flow cat (which is also 3 inches). I plan to do nothing with my exhaust manifold or O2 housing at this point. However, with that said, I have been told that the 2G housing is a bit better than the 1G. In fact, some people even replace the 1G they have with a 2G part.

While I realize that my set-up will be a bit different from yours simply because I have a second gen, I do expect to see a sinificant power gain from the new dp (or so I have read).

Hope this helps some.

If you have the money get a whole 3inch turbo back at once. If that's not possible then get a cat-back first, then test-pipe,then O2 ElimDP or 3inch DP and a O2 elim housing.

would it make sense to do the exhaust manifold and turbo first, then the downpipe/catback, both together, any other mix and match combos that will reduce the number of times I have to take everything apart? - ya know, I like to play with the engine, but sometimes I like to drive even more :)

thanks for the replies thus far...

Ok well I am not sure what stage of Tuning you are looking at doing (I am talking about the tuning guides here). Here is a link to the Stage 1 which sounds like perhaps where you are headed: Tuners Stage 1 for 1G

As far as starting with a new turbo, you might want to consider the supporting mods that need to be in place before the turbo - e.g. fuel management.

I noticed that you don't have a boost controller or intercooler piping so that might be a good way to go as well. I did my upper IC pipe, BOV, and boost controller at the same time. At that time I also put in a new boost gauge (stock is a POS) and an EGT.

I'm planning on doing the turbo-back all in one shot as soon as I've scrounged up the money for it (mmmm, 3" SS with O2 eliminator; can't wait to drive over to HRC and write that check :) ).

But, I'm in the "I want to do this once, and only once" camp. ;)

Thanks all for the input...

I think the way I'll end up going is to do the manifold (install new 2g or evo)- forward thinking to getting the turbo as the second step - downpipe, catback and all...

Batgirl, I agree that I don't have an IC pipe, but I do have a manual boost controller (Joe P MBC - see my profile), and except for a little boost spike when it comes on, it pulls solid and doesn't lose boost at 17PSI - read: much cheaper solution does nearly as well, and the 1g BOV is generally regarded as a better BOV than 2g stock

I'm still weighing the options between smic and fmic... will let you know how that goes. Also, I'll update my profile with some of the other mods that are there - including the fuel pump rewire :)

logic, you're pretty much in the same neck of the woods... where is HRC? I'm in Glendale Heights and locating yet another local perf shop would be nice...

Oops my bad. I thought I read it close enough. Guess my work is eating up more of my brain than I thought. ;)

Anyway, good luck with your mods.
