ok Im thinking of doing an exhaust set up like a mustang with the muffler in the middle instead of the back, minus the ctalyutic converter. I was wondering if anyone has done this and how it sounded/ performed. Thank you

well considering the bends ur exhaust has to make i dont know where ur going to stick it, and besides that a dsm is an import, not a domestic, any good 3" exhaust would have a straight through muffler with 3" inlet and outlet, and either a 4 or 5" tip, unlike a mustang that has chambered flowmasters to try and hide the sound of all that un-needed displacement
the muffler on ur car should be 3", hollow, and straight through on the inside, that pipe should have holes in it and be surrounded by sound dedening material, but the flowmasters that the majority of people run on mustangs are oval and completly hollow with walls on the inside that look like one of those mazes kids run mice through for science projects if u cut it in half, it suppreses sound by restricting airflow, the more "chambers" a flowmaster muffler has the more walls are on the inside, more walls mean less airflow and less sound
the point of that is that good 3" inlet mufflers dont restrict airflow much at all, they should be at the end of the exhaust to deaden the sound the most and restrict airflow the least, if u stock it in the middle it will create more backpressure(which will not give u power on a turbo car, more backpressure will probally make u lose power), and unless u run 4" piping from the muffler back it will flow like crap. and i think a 4" pipe riunning under ur rear axle will look pretty dumb, and it wolnt clear an uprise in the road much less a speed bump
if it was better to have the muffler somewhere else dont u think one of the dozens of dsm exhaust makers would have thought of it and made an exhaust like this before u? same goes for putting flowmasters at the very end of the exhaust on a mustang like u would on an import, it doesnt get done like that because it best the way it is

Can yougive any REAL evidence of what you just said?...you theory is wrong. I have a 3" downpipe to dynomax ultraflow 3" Welded straight through muffler right in the middle of the car to a 3" pipe (about 2 feet) and then a 3" turndown right before the gas tank.

My car sounds great and it is also VERY fast for my mods....so dont post CRAP unless you know what your talking about......4 inch pipe? WTF why?

backpressure is the only problem with that set up, any muffler will create backpressure, putting it closer to the engine will only create more backpressure, and putting a larger pipe after the muffler would eliminate most of that backpressure(on a n/a car backpressure is a good thing, on a turbo car its a bad thing, thats y they put mufflers there on domestics and not on turbo imports), its certainly not going to make a noticable loss of power as opposed to putting it at the end of the exhaust because most dsm mufflers are straight through designs anyway, but its not making any more power then a regular muffler location
if ur going to run an exhaust with no cat and a muffler u cant see u might as well just run a straight pipe off ur downpipe with a tip on the end, it will give u a hell of alot more power then any exhaust with a muffler would, u can put the shell of a cat in there with a straight pipe running through it and u can do the same with a muffler if u want it to appear like it had them so cops ticket u for it
and like i said before, if there was any benifit from putting the muffler closer to the engine dont u think someone would already be selling an exhaust made in that fashion?

ok Im not trying top hide any sound at all....I am running catback and a high flow cat and at full throttle all you can hear is turbo spool and the bov. DSMs and export models, the 5 in japan came from here. Second If I could I wouldnt run any exhaust but I need some re4striction on sound. If the muffler being in the middle was restricting power the mustangs wouldnt be using them(I work for ford). but thanks for the help, anyone else with this or similar setups please respond thank you.
