I have a 93 Talon AWD with a 7bolt that has 142,000 miles and i might be buying a 61,000 mile 6bolt long block from a 91tsi. My question is, what are any differences besides the flywheel, is the crank angle sensor the same in case the new engine doesn't have one, ignition all the same, any differences in the valvetrain "cam's or lifters etc." and any thing else that i may have to swap over. Any information would be greatly appriciated. Also, what is meant buy 1G big rods"are these oem rods from a specific year?" Thanks

To my knowledge, everything is the same other than the parts on the block. The cam sensor should be the same, I haven't seen a real different in them.

Big rods are because the 6-bolt rods are beefier than 7-bolt rods and handle more HP.

I'm replacing my crankwalked 7bolt with a 6 bolt right now. I put together a fully built 6 bolt. off the top of my head, here are the differences:

oil pan
flywheel
rear main seal housing
front case(pump)
auto tensioner
rods/crank/block obviously
oil filter mount(not the cooler itself, you can use either the early air cooler or the late water cooler)

hmm....thats all I can think of, everything else swaps over.

Thanks that seems to be a big help, I just wanted make sure i would have to dump alota money into this swap other than rebuilding it and installing new t-belt, water pump, oil pump/front cover etc. Thanks!

Im doing the exact same thing. 92 FWD turbo 6-bolt into a 93 TSi AWD. The mount brackets are different, the front car bracket is a "347" stamped bracket on a AWD and the rear lower bracket has a 1/4" wider bolt pattern. What's the difference in the crank angle sensor? Does the 93 have it whereas the 92 does not? will it wire up ok?

the front bracket that bolts to the block is different. the bolt hole is 1/2" further from the block. the number of the mount you need is a 347.

mount must be from am awd car. just use the one stamped "347" on the side of it for an AWD car. yes it is the one behind the radiator.

get the mount for the 1993 AWD car. it is the mount that comes with the car, not the one on the motor that probably was off a FWD car.

So are you saying that for the 6bolt block to fit in my car i'd have to get a '93 FWD front motor mount?? It shouldn't be any different from an AWD???

All 1g AWD motor mounts are the same. I just put a motor from a 91 AWD in my 93 AWD, and the mounts on the 6-bolt were fine.

The FWD motor mounts might be different, although that does surprise me.

Only 90's have the different oil cooler. They have an air to oil cooler, rather than the water to oil cooler.

You can also consider equipping the 91 motor with an aftermarket air to oil cooler. There is a ton of information about this in the archives.

AWD, FWD, and NT mounts front and rear are different. I just put a 1992 fwd motor into a awd car and had to change the front and rear mounts. unsubscribing now, I cannot believe how hard it is to get the message through. simply read what I wrote about six times now.
