Would anyone be interested in a technical article on low buck coil on plug that works?

I'm getting a set of coils identical to the EVO coils. I'll list the vehicles which these can be found on. They cost me all of $40

Its a double ended system. Example a coil sits on cylinder #1 with a short jumper wire to cylinder two.

Since it was designed for mitsubishi ECU's and engines (off a mitsu) installation ought to be straight forward. I have them on hold at a yard near my friends place. He'll get them for me on his way home from work and drop them off the next morning. I'm just waiting for a day when his shop is'nt so busy that the place is'nt closed by the time he leaves. It's to far out of my way considering I know someone who drives by it daily. The parts guy says it has a connector on it that looks just like a 2g coil connector. It might be a simple plug in operation. If not just wiring the primary wires to the 2g coil harnes ought to do the trick.

A typo right of the bat.

Jumper wire from the other end of the #1 coil to cylinder #4 (FOUR). ETC.

Electrically they are the same as the std coils except for their physical configuration.

So the same cylinders share the same coil as a factory ignition. The powertransistor triggers it the same way.

The only difference is they may be more potent and mounted on one of the cylinders the coil drives.

This sounds awesome... what does the double ended have to offer that the single found in the 300m that most ppl with this are using. Is it faster or more powerful. I would definately do it if your building a high revving engine. COPs will rev 10gs or more from what I understand, if the double ended delivers a bigger spark than thats awesome, we can keep the regular gap with high boost. Gimme some cars to yank it from!!

Double ended is just simpler and the same configuration as the OE coils ecept on the valve cover with two short plug wires instead of four long ones.

Go to an EVO board for details.

Mine are out of a mirage but 3g eclipses with the 2.4 four are the same thing.

So its basically same coil system, one coil firing two plugs simultaneously. If thats the case than the 300m COP system is much better. I would stick to that. Reason being is that the coil has longer periods to charge allowing a more consistent spark as the rpms go up.... wait a minuite. Thinkin about you would have two coils go simultaneously on the 300m upgrade too... wont you... lemme check real quick..

...guess its all starting to look like looks and eliminating the long plug wires... your pick.

There are only two coil channels on the factory ECU.

The power transistor only has two coil outputs as well.

The power transistor only puts out so much power per driver. A or B.

Unless you add a second power tranisitor so that you have A1, B1 and A2,B2 ouputs the 4 coils system would actually have less power than the factory or the DECOP system.

The best high dollar coil on plug is to use the pencil style coils with the built in coil drivers. Another nit picky thing is to have an aftermarket ECU with four coil ouputs. You can get fancy by doing pretty much anything you want.

Like turning off waste spark at high RPM so the coils fire less often. Having different timing on the waste spark vs the powerstroke spark.

Alot of that stuff applies to only .01% of DSM's

My intent with this is to show how to do an easy COP for less than the cost of some brands of plug wires.

It has four coil outputs.

You can't go direct to a coil with them unless it has a built in driver. (pwr transistor). I know the AEM has atleast four outputs.

When you just plug and play it it only uses two since it is setup for a stock harness. Buy two extra pins to wire up two more of the coil outputs and run the wires from the ECU to the valve cover mounted coils. There will also be some setup issues in the software to configure the four outputs.

The ECU (OE or EMS) coil outputs are low current signal type outputs.

The signal goes to the coil driver and the driver switches the high current to the coil.

Which is the power TR unit right... so if i hook up another one... vioala! True COP... up grade my valvetrain add bigger cams and I will see what 10gs will do to my engine...MUAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

....anyway...

I love this post

If your trans wants to shift that high and you have the con rods and valve train for it.

Your best bet is to get these mitsu coils.

http://www.meaa-mea.com/products/p_ignition.asp

The pencil coils and order them with the integrated coil drivers.

Just run your coil outputs from the ECU to the right connector on the coil for that output.

A setup like that will be $ome dollar$.

For the $40 I have in the OE parts off another mitsu it beats buying new plug wires.

So what exactly do you need to order from them to do the COP and what do you need to do to your ign. ....... plz be kinda specific so I get it right the first time, thanks for the info.... I had just posted a thing asking about COP

EVO, 3g 2.4, mirage, some "cloud cars" with the 2.4.

Just call a yard that knows how to use a cross reference or look at a box of aftermarket "wires" for an EVO as to what cars it fits. Those will be the cars to get the coils from.

You need the two coils from that car. You also need the plug connections, for the plug it sits on and the two other cylinders. Most yards pull stuff like that as one unit. Mine ran $40. I still have to get out there to get them but they are paid for. Its a 45min drive.

Just get them salvage.

To do the pencil coils you just order the coils with integrated drivers. Four of them. I don't have the pin out for the pencil coils.

There will be power leads like on a power transitor hook up and the signal wire for the ECU.

I have the two double ended coils already,I just need help wiring this in and what kind of spark plug wire to be use on this type of coils. Thanks for your help in advance

Ask on an EVO board about the aftermarket "wires" to use with these.

The kit includes the two jumpers like from 1 to 4. Some kits inclued a new link for below the coil to the plug and some do not.

How much of the set did you get?

When I actually get my hands on the set I have I'll do pictures and a write up on it.

Ok I have the coils.

Markings

Diamond

FL0162 0X11

They have integrated drivers. Just a three terminal connector and the two plug leads.

Power
GND
Trigger.

Two plug outputs.

I'll need to look at a car or ask an EVO owner Which pin on the coil goes to what wire. I can also pull the wiring harnes diagram for one of those cars too.

The coil to plug interlink. Below the coil to the plug is a bit too long.

These are seperate part #s. These are marked 2708.

Some... Not most wire sets for these come with new links so I'll look for those or find the correct length ones somewhere else.

Once I get the wrinkles ironed out and everything dialed in I'll do the article.

yesterday I was thinking about this same thing...'cause the 4 COP didn't worked...but it seems that you're some months ahed of me...anyhow...did it worked???pics???

Talk about "thread from the dead".

Funny thing is that I never searched for nor have I seen this thread to know that such an item existed. That is until about 3 months ago when we purchased a 2000 KIA Sportage. After the purchase I was doing the normal "new to me" used car maintenence....fluid/filter changes, plugs/wires, etc. Got home with the parts and was looking through the spark plug wire box and there's only 2 wires. I thought WTF? Somebody screwed up, but no......it is 1 coil pack on plug with the jumper to the next cylinder, 2 coil packs total.

I was thinking that was a cool way to do things, a combo of both worlds.................
