Used Tranny?

My transmission is dead so:
1.)How much is a fair price for a junkyard/used tranny?
2.)What year trannies will fit my car? (1993 Eagle Talon TSi AWD)
3.)How much effort would go into fitting a GVR4 tranny? (Modifications/Costs/Instructions)

*Please no info about rebuilds, I've already researched that.

M+S recycling in north Sacto area quoted me $550 when I was looking last year.

I'm not too comfortable buying used trannies because there's too much uncertainty. I don't mind buying non-moving parts used, like manifolds, but complex stuff? I'd rather not risk it unless the budget is really short AND there was a backup plan. Just my $0.02
