On my 1g, when you are looking at the car, to the left (passenger side) of the heat shield you can just barely see the leftmost exhaust manifold stud. Now, I noticed there is no nut there. I am assuming my stud broke and I have to take off the manifold, drill out the old stud, put in a new stud, and then put everything back on with a new nut and washer on the new stud.

Right? I'll post pix soon. If you need more clarification pester me.

Sorry if this should be in Problem/Diagnosis.

Thanks for your help.

one missing stud wont kill you.:thumb:

Yes you are missing a stud from your exhaust manifold. My advise is to take the heat shield off and see if there are any more missing. I thought I was only missing 1 or two at most till I took the shield off and found out I was missing 4 out of 9. Replacing them doesn't necessarily mean that you have to drill them out. To replace them, you can pull the exhaust manifold off to see if they broke while leaving some sticking out of the head (this is how all 4 of mine were). Give them a good lube with PB Blaster and let them soak for a day and then use a torch to heat up around the stud (aim flame away from the stud) and try to pull them. I used two thinner nuts and torqued them on what was left of the stud and used that to back the studs out of the head.

The only curse of this is that the only way to get the exhaust manifold off is to pull the turbo b/c mitsu. used three bolts and a stud to connect the turbo to the manifold. I ended up getting all three bolts out and then I pulled the stud and replaced it with a bolt for ease of removal next time. Oh yeah, to get the turbo out, you have to detatch the O2 housing (leave it attached to the turbo) from the downpipe so you can pull everything out in one tug and hope you don't bang anything on your way out.

I thought this was going to be a one day project for me and it ended up being a three day ordeal. Make sure you have all the parts you'll need (exhaust manifold gaskets, turbo gasket, O2 gasket, bolt to replace stud in turbo, exhaust manifold studs with nuts, 19MM SHORTIE WRENCH FROM SEARS!!!) Check out www.slowboyracing.com for all the parts you'll need except the wrench from sears.

If you are only missing one or two don't worry about it. If it's more than that, start prepping yourself for a long weekend under the hood and some tired fingers by the end of it.

Thanks man. That was very helpful. I will pull the shield and go from there. I may be hassling you for info later.

Thanks again, I appreciate it.
