what does the dyno look like with a 14b? does fall off close to redline?

i have a feeling it does and when i get my dsm im looking for a good street turbo with the capability of getting me into the 12s

i do know that the 16g will max out at around 300hp, is that the same for the BIG 16 though? I dont know much about turbo's so if you use accronym's let me know what they mean or do...what is the difference between the two phsyically and performance wise?

The housing is all the same on the 16g period... The compressor wheel in a big 16g is bigger and it flow 450cfm compared to 305 for a regular 16g. With a bog 16g I have seen dyno pulls maxing at 360whp, and Im sure a 16g could hit a little over 300 with the mods and tuning...

Actually the stock 14b falls off at about 5500rpms and will make about 300 hp max. The small 16g will make about 340 max, and the big 16g will make about 375 max. They are both good turbos especially for the street, they are cheaper than hybrids. Physically from the outside they look the same just like a 14b, but inside the small 16g has a smaller compressor wheel(1.830"minor, 2.365" major, 505cfm@15psi) and the big 16g has a bigger compressor wheel(1.892" minor, 2.680"major, 550cfm@15psi). I run a big 16g and I love it.

14B flows -- 305 cfm
16G flows -- 405cfm
Big 16G flows -- 450cfm

These are at 14.7 psi.

If you are using the stock cams the power will fall off towards redline. That has more to do with the cam profile you are using than the turbo, UNLESS the turbo you are using will not hold boost pressure to redline (IE T-25). Then the power falls off when the boost pressure falls.

My 14b holds 22-23 psi to redline, and runs 12s everythime I take it out. My small 16g held 24 psi to redline, and only ran 2 tenths faster ;) Never run a big 16g personally. Also, I agree with IPT about the power drop being related to the cams, not the turbo. I'm gald I'm not the only one who sees this :) Look at a dyno chart for a stock cammed car with a green and the power still starts to fall off at about 6500...

The ported big 16g on my 2nd gen pulls all the way to rev limit and would keep pulling if I had more R's.

You are correct, BoostinAWD. However, my info shows a slight difference in numbers for the 14b I show 420cfm. As for the big 16 and small 16 numbers you posted, they are correct.

How about some 1/4 mile data, as I recall, records for these turbos are:

14B 12.05 @ 113.5
Small 16G 11.59 @ 116-117
Big 16G 11.59 @116-117

This shows a couple of points:

1. 14B is much better than most people give credit for! That one had 100k miles on it and made ~ 350 wheel hp (that is around 400hp at the crank…)

2. As far I am concerned there isn’t a great deal of difference between small and big 16G to justify paying more for it. Sometimes shops have specials on big 16G’s and sell them for about the same price as regular 16G. In that case it is worth getting, otherwise, stick with the small 16G.

DUHHH!! I don't know what I was thinking. A 13B is 305cfm. I guess I just started off on the wrong turbo. Sorry :(
