I have a 97 GST with K&N FIPK and Apexi cat back and i get About 13psi of boost in 2nd-5th but first i only get about 6 and i have to punch it to get it. Is this normal or is something wrong. Thanks -Kenny

My boost sucks in first gear, But that's becasue of my exhaust manifold. I can only get like 7 or 8 psi by the time first gear is over.

Later,

if you replace the restrictive uic piping you will get a lot more psi boost. i noticed it instantly (got psi to 15 steady). but you should also do the fuel pump rewire at the same time. Then when i replaced the cat, then the turbo would boost up to 18psi.

well, i am not an expert, but i basically asked the same questions a couple months ago. Basically, if you plan on doing any modifications other than the K&N filter, you should do the fuel pump rewire. This only takes a little time. Because when you run at higher psi, the factory wiring cannot supply enough current to your fuel pump, and then you run the chance of running your engine lean. That will kill your engine. Make sure to upgrade your 2G bov to either aftermarket or 1G bov. The 2G bov can leak and also kill your turbo.

Now, from what i have heard, stock turbos cant run more than 15 psi very well. Mine is running up to 18psi, but i might add the manual boost controller to keep it no higher than 15. My car is really quick and i have done the least expensive modifications:

Replaced the restrictive Upper Intercooler Pipe ($18)
Replaced the catalytic ($50)
Turbo XS Bov ($175)
K&N Filter (free, cuz it came with the car)
New NGK Factory recommended spark plugs
MSD Ignition Spark Plug Wires ($75)
Fuel Pump Rewire ($.75 for the relay & $2 for the 10 gauge power wire)
Autometer Boost Gauge & Air/Fuel Gauge ($100)

Thats basically it. Now you can buy a UIC pipe from companys for over $75 and you can buy differnent Bov's. First make sure you get a boost gauge. That is the most important part, before you start adding a lot of stuff to your car. I hope this helps!
