How can you tell how a block is 6 vs 7 bolt?

I have an 93 TSI, I bought it off a friend who bought it off auction w. a rebuild title. When installing my exhaust I noticed that the flywheel had markings on it "In Yellow-Junk Yard Marker" that said "Flywheel 91 Talon" This obviously leads me to belive that this car had the engine replaced at some point w. an 90 or 91 6 bolt. Is there any way you can tell for sure by looking at the vin # on the block itself? Thanks a million!

6bolt means the amount of bolts that attach the flywheel to the engine.

dont think he was asking anything of that sort.

go to www.vfaq.com

under engine (i think) they tell you some differences.something to do with the oil pan. good luck

the manifold has 12mm bolts top and bottom on 6 bolt, 7 bolts have 14mm bottom and 12 on top, its something like that, i do remember on my 2g there were 2 diff sizes of bolts on the manifold, and on my 6 bolt they are all 12mm, thats an ez way to check, its not a definate but its something, you can also check the oil pan, a dented in pan by the subframe or if its flat
