Toronto,
Hello all,
I am doing my first oil change on my 93 TSi AWD, and I was wondering if I can use that Lucas Oil Additive in my engine. I don't know if turbo charged engines are more or less likey to react badly to additives. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

I don't believe in additives. I mean, I've seen the cans and jars on the shelves, I just don't believe in using them.

What evidence is your belief based on? Have you ever actually tried using any of them? Do you have any first hand (not second hand or third hand) experience?

He said he doesn't believe in them. I used Lucas in my trans and my engine, and have not noticed anything. This is true of most additives on the market.

while we are talking about oil's,what weight should i use in my diff and rear end?..i thought i heard 90w but i could be wrong..any suggestions too for the tranny..ill prolly be going with gm syncroshift and a 75w,also what i heard..any info?..sorry to hi-jack the thread but figured its better than starting another one..

I had a 610 Datsun my machinist had mis-bored. Tried all the additives I could get my hands on to get it to "magically" heal. Had a '67 Alfa Duetto that'd begun to use oil fairly seriously, the fellow I sold it to tried the old Motor Mender pellets, to virtually no success. For years STP (Studebaker Testing Products, for the curious) was the additive to use. I worked in a restoration shop that did stuff from the thirties, forties and fifties, we saw lots of interesting things. One of the more interesting was what you'd find in an STP-treated motor: solid black varnish, worse than any Pennzoil story you've heard. STP is ragweed oil.
Modern motor oils are manufactured with their own additives, they have more than enough in them to keep your engine happy. One exception I'll speak for is Lifter Lube, meant for hydralic lifters that are carboned-up to the point they're not holding pressure. It seems to work as though by magic. but it's hardly more than an extended-life flush.
