Hey guys,
This may not be extreme enough for this forum. If its not I appologize and please move it to the appropriate forum.
I'm now on my second dsm. My first was a 1992 awd talon. That one was stolen shortly after I put a lot of money into mods. Six months later I came across a 1990 talon awd for the right price. It has a few mods but I'm going to redo everything. This time around I'm wanting to go as fast as I can go on a 14b. My car has some sort of 16g on it right now and I was wanting to buy a used 14b that needs a rebuild. If one were to rebuild a 14b what mods would you have done to make the 14b the best it can be? Porting both turbine and compressor housings, and wastegate flapper mod would be done. Would any of you change the wheel sizes for better flow or efficiency? What are the big differences between the 16g and 14b? Do the really fast stock turbo guys do anything special to their 14bs? Thanks for your help. Again my appologies if this isn't quite extreme enough. But I figure running really fast quarters on the stock turbo is going to require some extreme measures.

If you wanted to go as fast as you could on a 14b, then why would you switch wheels? If you put a different wheel on, then it would not be a 14b any more.

Don't put a large wastegate flapper on it. Those have been proven to cause problems when attempting to run higher boost levels.

Porting is really your only option, but it doesn't usually make much of a difference.

Kyle hit it dead on there dude...
You also wouldnt need a flapper as the stock is not only good enough to run factor boost but runnign higer boost wont make a difference at all. The only thing you need to do is make sure the turbo is at 100% and port the turbing housing and thats it...

Having it rebuilt will help too. Seems odd, but I had a garbage 14b and the car would do any better than high 12s. On my last run of that night the track officials handed me one 14b turbine wheel, that shot out my exhaust. ;) I may make a key chain out of it or something... I used to run slightly faster on a "good" 14b with half the mods I had that night, so I think the rebuild will help. Otherwise all you have is porting, and like Kyle said, I never gained anything by porting everything on my 14b setup. I ran 12.7s ported and unported. But you should do it none the less. And for more info on the larger flapper thing, see a thread I started here that goes something like "internal wastegate blowing open info" or something to that effect. Here it is, http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=55813&highlight=internal

Good luck.

the fastest iv ever heard of anyone running on a 14b is 12.02, and i believe that was with a built motor, if u have a 16g already u might as well keep that, it can be much faster, if u lived closer id gladly give u my 14b for a small 16g, ur much better off with that, but if u really want to have one of those "fastest stock turbo dsm in such and such a state or area" cars then get it ported and start porting and building the engine

The 12.02 was on a stock motor, and the usual basic mods. Leon Reitman (GRNDSM) ran an 11.8 on his 14b, on a more modded car (mods that dont help much on a 14b IMO). Considering the record for the 16g is 11.5 as far as I know, I dont see a huge difference between the two... Same goes in my personal experience.

i always thougth there wasn't that much of a difference between the overall power you can extract out of a 16g and a 14b i know the 16g is faster but i always thougth it wasn't that much faster or could make tht much more power. Correct me if im wrong. If so you might just want to keep it.

16G will make more power at ?higher? boost levels (over 18psi), up to that point, the difference would be minimal. Actually, 14b can make MORE torque and power at lower rpms and lower boost.

By the same token, the ?big16G? will not be any better until around 23-24psi and not many people take their 16g?s to that level.

BTW, you were right, this should not be in Extreme Tuner Forum :) Thread moved.

The 14b is probably one of the most underated turbos. If ported properly this bi*** amkes so real power. When I first swapped my little T25 I was un impressed with the lack of bottom end that it had compared to the T25. However, The 3rd gear pull was meeean! OMG And the pull kept going and going and going to the red spot:thumb: Shit pulls really hard up around 16 psi. and what theT25 had stronger at 2500-5500 I now have from 3000-7000. Fair trade I think sWTF!!nly problem noe is that I heat soak my intercoolerand get knock on hot days..My friend has a GSX with a BIG 16G and my 3rd gear pull is just as hard, but he has a harder pull as his rpms get higher. and he also has a strong top end.
