has anyone installed valve stem seals?

I was just wondering if anyone here has replaced the valve stem seals. I went to mistu. and got a price quote for them to do it and it was $800+ and some of the other places I called wanted over$600. I seams that they all want over 10 hours of labor and say that the head needs to be removed. I looked at the VFAQ and it said that you can do this with the head on. If so why do all these shops take the head off? Any info about this would be great. thanx.

I have done valve seals, but my head was off when I did them, so it probably isnt any help. I think with the right tools, you could definitely do it without taking the head off. I see no reason why the head has to come off. My head was junk, thats the only reason mine was off in the first place. I dont know how mechanically inclined you are, but if you can afford to have your car off the road for a little while, go for it. Just make sure you have a backup plan if you drop a valve in the cylinder.......knock on wood.....

Yes, I did it with head on the car. I would easily charge $400-500 to do it again. Not an easy job. Took 3 of us all day to do it.
