Has anyone experimented with getting a cold air intake on a '90 "pop-up" headlight Eclipse?

I have done this....I took out my headlights, just as an experiment and cut a larger hole to the air filter (w 2G MAS/K&N Filter) and unplugged the left side pop-up motor just so that I could pop the one side for a movable "Scoop". I drove to work this morning...Here are the stats in my area:

66 Degrees F
Dew Point: 57°F
Humidity: 73%
Pressure: 29.89 inches and rising

The Air Temp reading to the MAS was between 75 and 101.

To make a long story short....I would pop the "scoop" at highway speeds and at stand still.....The only time I noticed a temp drop from roughly 78-84 was when I was standing still in traffic...I would pop the headlight and temps would drop about three degrees, Sometimes!!

But when traveling 75 on the highway, my temp stayed at about 74, with the "scoop" up or down..no change at all. Test results were WAY inconsistent.

Can anyone tell me why this would be and has anyone got a better idea for cold air? How about a screen vent over the Air Intake....how do you keep water out?

Any suggestions would be great!!

Yes, cold air makes a difference, and no the turbo will not just heat the air back up. If anyone tells you this kick them in the sack and walk away.

This is how i did mine, my logs are very consistant. I never get knock and the throttle always feels crisp.

yeah but you have a vpc jdm making it MUCH easier to run a setup like that. i plan on getting the maf translator for blow thru and doing a set up like that. my buddy has a vpc and he went to summit and picked up a cheap honda intake with filter and routed his under the car very similar to yours. said it made a HUUUGE difference. so yeah cold air works.

However, this is all great ideas, but I have 3in FMIC piping blocking all of that area, down below.....I would have to go to a 2in intake pipe to squeeze an air filter down there....and that's not good either.

An idea I had last night while installing an engine immobilizer, was this....how about a screened opening on the hood just past the intake. So as to not suck in water....and when it rains real hard just cover the screened opening with a magnetic vinyl sheet (like those used for signs on cars)....Well? What do ya think?

:D I think I have the perfect plan....for cold air. I am goinmg to do this this weekend if weather permits and I'll tell you you how it comes out. I am going to cut some very precise holes in the hood and screen them, two just above the intakle and one long one in front of the turbo. I will use a magnetic sheet to cover the one above the intake when it rains, however, I am going to install a rian gutter lip on the underside, just to be safe. I will post picks soon....

Thanks.
I used the stock I/C duct , a reducer to a 4" flex pipe from a Hardware store, inlarged the hole where the stock UIPC goes through , installed the air filter in a custom made/cut plexi-glass and covered with the now dirty blue foam.

Corrct me if I'm wrong but doesn't AEM make a BYpass valve that goes inline with the airfilter to allow you to run an open air element in unprotected areas? The unit has been tested and will let NO water in although if your in a severe puddle/splash or whatever it will bog your car down but it won't kill your turbo. Any ideas? I plan on running a similar setup with the airfilter in the near location where the stock IC existed.
Thanks.
