i know the car is running lean like anti honda, and i'm sure mine is worse. my car died running half way home from houston as soon as i pulled into a gas station to fill up. and it took like 2 min. before it started up again. my a/c was also acting up, wouldnt blow cold air if i was going over 70 mph. my fan closest to the exhaust manifold is melted (the blades) and also my dip stick plastic handle melted. i plan on putting my 255 fuel pump in this week... will this solve my lean problem or do i need injectors also? still running the factorys, never did buy the 720 for those of you that have read my mods list, and also i dont know how to set my s-afc II, can some one please help me with that.

can i run without that fan? exhaust temps were between 550 and 650 degrees the whole way home according to my exhaust temp gage. where can i get a fan for cheep?.. i just need the one on the drivers side the other one is fine.

well i just got finished checking the plugs, and although there was some build up on them the electrode wasn't worn down and didn't really look all that bad, but i will replace them anyway.

Charles, do you have both your lower and upper heat shield attached? What kind of boost are you running? The pump should help with the lean problem, I remember when a buddy of mine in his 1G had a hellacious problem with his air/fuel ratio being drastically lean, the problem was that his injector pulse was extremely, and I mean extremely weak. Also, he attempted to rewire his 190lph pump, and the wiring was so shoddy that it probably didn't pump 90lph.

The new pump should help good enough, your injectors might be in trouble as well. If you have anymore details on the situation, let me know.

no heat shield over the exhaust manifold, nor is there one covering the turbo.. it probably wouldn't fit not really sure it's a hrc super 16g.

as far as boost. i know i'm going to sound like a noob saying this, but i have no idea. there is no b/c on the car just a boost gagg, so i'm assuming it's at factory level.

i have a apexi s-afc on the car, but i dont know how to tune it, or to check to see if the setting are correct. does anyone know what i shold have them set at?

man i'm learning the hard way around these 4g63. i'll be happy once everything is fixed and running righ.

That is probably a main contributer to the fan being melted. Do you have an EGT gauge? Also, I'm pretty sure the heat shields will fit, I don't see why they wouldn't.

No boost gauge. That's a no-no Charles. :p I know you bought the car modded from a guy who lives in my town. I actually talk to Chris (the guy who owned the car) quite a bit. I also doubt it's at factory level.

I can't really help you much with the tuning, as I'm learning to do that myself as we speak. Call RRE. I'm sure they'd be glad to help if that link can't answer your question.

Welcome to the wonderful world of DSM's, turning ordinary people into mechanics since 1989. ;)

If you dont have the lower heat shield on, it will melt the A/C fan. I have a couple 1g lower heat shields if you need one. I think they will fit on a 2g, I should be swapping my turbo out on my 98 within a couple days and can test fit one of them on there to see if it fits if you'd like...
Also, instead of replacing your A/C fan you could just take the whole A/C system out if you dont need it. Save quite a bit of wieght.

A 1G lower heat shield won't fit a 2G O2 housing. I had to buy a 2G lower heatshield from the dealer when I upgraded to a ported 2G O2 housing. The difference is the O2 sensor location.

Couldnt you just cut out a hole for the sensor?

hey john, yes i do have both a egt gauge which maintained 550 to 650 degrees between 70 and 80 mph. i also have a boost gauge and that gauge never showed boost above 0.

well i just got off the phone with chris and he said that boost levels were at factory setting for his mods (whatever that means), but he said that wot boost levels are at about 24 psi. OUCH!!... on a factory fuel setting. i'm glad i took you guys advice and stopped pushing it until i had a chance to get a tune up and get the car checked out.

well now i need a 2g heat shield at least for the exhaust mani. anyone have one for sale?

The 1g lower heat shield fit my 2g with the 3" RNR o2 elim downpipe. The RNR downpipe relocates the o2 sensor to the 1g location. So send me a pic of your downpipe/o2 sensor and Ill tell you if my 1g shield will fit.

u need to have both heatshields on to prevent ur fans from melting. u should also replace tha stock fans with permacool fans. part# 19010. u can get them from summit racing. they flow alot more air, and ur less likely to overheat if u have a fmic.

i do have a fmic from apexi with 2.5" down pipe... i still need to replace the upper.

my o2 sensor is positioned to where it pointing straight at the fan (driver side the one that melted), and is almost centered in the middle of that fan also.

i drove my car today after buying another dip stick from the dealership. car ran fine, my a/c works also. is it possible that i may have a exhaust leak, and that what causing my problem. i drove the car for a few miles maybe 10 miles for about 15 min or so. i poped the hood just to take a look and the latch that you pull to lift the hood was so hot i almost couldnt touch it... yet my egt gauge was reading temps from 400 to 500 degrees.

..... and if i have the car in 1st or reverse and i'm pushing my clutch pedel so that it is practially touching the floor board and i release the break the car will move... what could be causing this? could it be the shifter cables? the shifter has a bit of play as well.

hey matt, i'll take the heat shield. i can easily put another hole for my o2 sensor.

i was thinking could this problem be caused by the cat i had to have put on. i was thinking that if the cat was restricting exhaust flow it could cause the manifold and o2 housing to heat up enough to melt the fan,... is this correct?... could my cat be part of the problem? i cant remember, but i dont remember the engine bay being this hot before the cat was put on.

if i change out my old pump to a high volume pump (255), would i need a fuel pressure regular as well?

well i found out what the problem was, or at least part of the problem. my gasket on the bottom of the o2 housing has cracked and slid free from between the o2 housing and is basically leaking exhaust gasses right at the fan and the alternator.

i figure i replace the gasket my melted fan balde, put in the fuel pump, high flow fuel reg., and injectors i'm going to buy from danny, and that should solve my engine bay heating problems. :)
