As I'm upgrading, I'm ready to add a large FMIC with 3" piping to my 2G with stock turbo. Will all this additional volume hurt my turbo lag? Do I need to wait and make this addition along with a big 16?

3" piping? why?
with a 16G you need 2.25 or 2.5 MAX.
with 3" piping you'll be lucky to hit any boost at 5000 rpm

What are you talking about piping size has hardly anything to do with turbo lag. Maybe a 1/10 of a second or so if that.

It is 2.5" pipe I have to use, I was incorrect with 3" and thanks for the correction for the designation of the stock turbo. Bottom line question is a conversion to a FMIC will increase the volume between the turbo and the intake by 3 times over stock. Air has to fill a volume before it can begin to build presure. Wondered from experiences the significance of lag that results. Thanks all.

The significance is very small. Even the T-25 flow enough air to fill over 140 liters per second, and at 3000 rpm, it's filling about 50 liters per second. There is no way that another couple is going to make much of a difference.
