I have just finally got my car running after about 10 years of being idle. Motor was built about 8yrs ago, put together about 2 or 3 years ago and put in. It sat till about a 2 months ago together w/o being run.
It was bored and has new pistons, rings and rods. I lubed up the motor knowing it might sit for a while. I have it running pretty good and have put about 25 miles on it just puttin around the neighborhood and have let it run in the driveway revvin it a little to work out the idle surge.
It seems to smoke quit a bit when it's revved then hardly at idle. Is the normal for a fresh motor? I was told I might have to wait for the rings to seat before it starts going away is this true? Any input from experienced builders would be great. BTW it's a 1G Tsi (91).

:thumb: Also when motors sit for a while "any" buildup will smoke like a mother. No worries, once its all burnt out and compression checks out you will be happy

Heh... ten years on the shelf means it's not "fresh" anymore. Your valve seals may be gone forever. The rings should get themselves sorted out in a bit, but to help them, gitcha some Marvel Mystery Oil, get the engine nice and warm -not hot- pull the plugs, and give each cylinder about a tablespoon of MMO. Let it sit overnight, then put a rag over the plug holes (a few rags, it'll want to blow it right off) and crank it over a few times to blow most of the oil out. Put the plugs back in and drive for about a half-hour. It'll smoke like the dickens for five minutes as that oil's burned out, but you'll have all the lands and ring surfaces clear of anything gumming it. Then add about half a quart to the crankcase with the engine warm, drive it for another half-hour, bring it back and let it cool overnight again. Take it out the next day for a nice long country drive with lots of varied terrain and speeds, and change oil. If it can be magically fixed, Marvel Mystery Oil will do it.

Hey guys thanks for the input. I talked to a couple of old school engine builders in the area and the ring thing seems to be normal.
Defiant should I put some miles on it before I try the MMO, the motor was put together about 2 or 3 yrs ago does that make a difference?
