Aftermarket intake

I went to a couple import shops a couple hrs away and they said that i cant put an intake on my car because of the mass air flow sensor. I was wondering if this was true or not because I thought that they made an adapter for the mass air flow to the filter??? If I can put one on where do i get an intake????
