I am trying to decide which head gasket to buy for my car. I am doing a 1g head swap. I was wondering how much the HKS gasket raises compression and if it would be a good idea for pump gas. I plan on running about 16lbs for daily driving. ?lbs for racing with racing fuel.

Here's what I have so far for my 2g outside in:
Cone intake through stock MAS
Dejon tool 4" intake pipe
GT25 turbo
HKS Silvia FMIC
Type S BOV
2.5" IC Piping
1g Throttle Body
1g intake manifold
1g head with 1mm oversized exhaust valves, titanium retainers, crower springs, HKS 272/272 cams & 1g CAS
680cc injectors
SFP turbo manifold
Walbro 255
AVC-R
S-AFC
Maybe some other things that I'm forgetting.

Ya the mitsu one is just as good and doesn't cost like 200-300 dollars.

How big is the core on that IC? are you sure it's big enought handle that turbo.

I hear the Cometic head gaskets are just as good as HKS and are half the cost. I think slow boy racing sells them for $100.

Okay so I've decided to go with the cometic since its cheaper, but I still feel that my original question hasn't been asnwered. Which thickness should I go with? Do I need to worry about thickness since my car is a daily driver. My bottom end is stock. What bore do I need to order.

At the low boost levels you're running at, there's no reason to use anything but the stock mitsu composite one.

Unless you run into extreme detonation, you're not going to blow a stock gasket with these boost levels.

I will be running higher boost levels for racing. I plan on getting the cometic gasket. I just want to know which thickness to get. Please don't tell me not to get it, that my set up is all wrong, or that I should get a new dog. Please someone answer my questions.

Your questions were already answered before you went off on your little noob-tangent.

It was just advice. As far as I'm concerned, you can throw a set of APC rice-lights on your car and a 200 shot of NAWS.

Okay, what about:
How much does a thinner head gasket raise compression?
Does it make a difference on pump gas?
What thickness should I get? - and -
What bore, which I already found elsewhere.

Alright, everybody chill.

1) From what i have come to learn, the hg doesnt really raise the CR a shiste load so i wouldnt worry about it messing with your boost. What i do know is that they have verying thickness' for decked/ heads to correct what has been milled. If your head has been milled a whole lot then you might want a thick one, see?

2) If that isnt of help or nobody else will help, go ahead and call slowboy racing. Im sure they will be happy to awnser your questions, thats what im doing tommorow.

1) I'm doubting that you're going to find a gasket thinner than stock that raises compression. Much larger than stock and you're going to mess with the factory quench setting.

2) No, in light of above.

3) This would depend on your motor. Is it stock, or has the head been decked at all.

4) Bore size doesn't matter, unless you're punching the motor out beyond factory service limit specs.

Nothing wrong with the Cometic. It is better than the mitsu MLS for cheaper. How car you argue with that? You can custom order them thinner or thicker than stock but I don’t know why you would want to RAISE compression on a car with a small turbo that would be running pump gas most of the time. The normal Cometic high performance gasket will work fine for you.

Any supporting evidence of these two statements? Or are they just something you pulled out of thin air?

1) Last time I looked, $65 is cheaper than $100.

2) I haven't seen *any* evidence that the Cometic is in any way "better" than the Mitsu Metal gasket. If you can find me proof of this I'll be sure to pass it along to those who have been using the Mitsu one (Jeff Hill, Dan @ Pruven, etc.).

I am just going off of what I have seen with my own two eyes. I have taken both apart and when you do you can really see how much better the Cometic seals.

The Mitsu MLS gasket is only $65?!? Most shops want at least 90 bucks. Or am I misreading you?

Proof in the DSM world is about as hard as FDA approval. Would two 550+ DSMs running well on that headgasket for an entire season be proof enough? Not really. Would Marco’s race car be proof enough? Eh close but not enough to be really convincing. If I get a chance I will take some pictures of both this weekend for you and then you can see for yourself.

Okay, let's go on your $90 assumption.

$90 is still less than $100, although, yes, they can be had for $65.30.

The 2nd point, (as far as which seals better) I have used the MLS on better then 20 cars with no problems. Some of which have seen 30 psi on a dyno on pump gas (just playing around with things) and others with 27 psi daily on pump gas.

You answered my question though...the "better then" comment was based on assumption and limited exposure.

Am I saying that the MLS is better then the Cometic? No (as neither of us have any concrete proof). Am I saying that I wouldn't say that one is better than the other, and I've heard no problems with either if installed correctly? Yes.

I've got an HKS head gasket thats for sale, its used but in perfect shape. Not sure what size it is, how do I check which one it is?

oh, 75 bucks shipped

I know two locals that have "blown" the Cometic "high boost" gaskets. I used to swear by them.. but now I'm having second thoughts as well. These are the gaskets w/ the little .057 sealing ring around the combustion chambers. Anybody else have any similar experiences? On both cars coolant was being boosted and pushed out of the overflow. Both have ARP studs torqued to 90-95# w/ ARP moly lube... and were retorqued after heat cycling.
