Since AWD can't be smog-tested on a dyno, emissions will automatically be low, right?

When you have an AWD car emissions tested, they can't use their dyno. So they do a two-speed idle test.
Now, since turbocharged cars physically can't build any boost in neutral without a load, then the emissions would be the same as another 2.0 four with a 8.5:1 comp. ratio. And that can't be much. My point is: I think that because I have AWD, I can get away with a gutted cat and not see higher emissions. Even a gutted 3" cat would probably not even be much higher, right? Or am I wrong?

I have a gutted cat and I passed with flying colors and I am not AWD so I had to do the rolling test as well. Just don't have a piece of ish car.

i dont know bout gutted cat.. but i had to do that enhanced dyno smog crap.. i was exempt from the dyno part of course due to awd.. but they did the other tests.. with all the mods i have (check my profile) i passed

We have AWD dyno's in CT, but thanks to our real world Republican governor, he has gotten an exemption for cars 4 years old or newer, and now allows authorized "shops" to sign off on your car. :thumb:

I honestly dont know about passing without a cat on the dyne, I will have to call BS on that, Ive seen DSM's with cat's fail TSI never mind a transient test, now your saying you spun on the dyne and passed with no cat? Sorry man, in the real world it doesnt happen unless you have one of your buddies behind that VMAS hose pulling away from the tailpipe, and even then you have a 50/50 chance. :)

Lots of alchohol does wonders. :D

I've never tried to go through without a cat, BUT I have taken some friggin dirty cars right on through with 1/3 to 1/2 denatured alcohol in the tank.

dont call bs on something you obviously do not know about.. I passed with a gutted cat on their awd dyno tester here in CO.. no problem, and i did not know anyone there.. they put the mirror under my car and checked for a cat and ran er', and it passed.. :thumb:

ill be tryin to smog my car in a couple weeks..full turboback 3" straight through, 720cc's, vpc, external gate, and no emmisions stuff...haha, not sure how it will do but who knows

Welcome to my world, the not real world of Tucson AZ. I think I would know if I passed with a gutted cat as I had to get out of my car and watch the dumbshit emissions guy grind getting into first gear. I wasn't even close to failing either, maybe your state is more strict or something but I am not making this up to please people I don't know.

If you dont mind me asking, what gasses are they checking for in your state?

Maybe. You have all that junk (windmill) in the exhaust stream, and 8½:1 isn't a good efficiency compression for modern gas.

Different states have different smog regs, and you'll get different results from any two mechanics and/or machines.

Are there any negative side effects when doing this?

How much do the dyno smog tests cost now? I haven't seen any in CA yet.
You will next test, sport. $85. At least, until Davis notices he can get more out of us for it. Oh, and they get that even though AWD doesn't go on the dyno. Someone's gotta come up with the $30K for that machine, and it ain't gonna be the shop.

I think they test HC and CO.

Damn, you lucky bastards, here they also test for NOx, im curious as to what your limits are, here for an average 95 model year car you will see HC limits at about 1.5 gpm and CO limits at about 20. gmp, any idea what your limits might be up there? Since you are not testing for NOx, and are able to run without a cat, im assuming that your limits must be much higher.

No not really. Just be sure to bring your car down to almost empty and dump like a gallon in. This way when you are done you can fill up and dillute the alcohol.

Alcohol does not have the same BTU content, and because of that you have to almost double the fuel amount to equal gasoline. In other words, if you ran straight alcohol in 550's, it would run so lean...well you wouldn't want to do that.

Watering down the gas with alcohol will lean things out a bit so don't go romping on it until you fill back up and dilute it enough.

Damn, no NOx would be great! Lean the crap out of it with no worry...what EGT? :D

Yes we have NOx in CT also. :(
