This is totally against eveything that I've ever said about JSPEC this and that, and how I always said that I'd never buy a JDM motor because they're just too much of a risk...
Well, I spun a bearing a few weeks ago, and have had very poor luck trying to find a beater (I commute in my GSX), and I don't quite have the fundage to build up a bare sixbolt, and my tranny is starting to crap the bed. While getting rides is OH SO MUCH FUN, I'd rather be driving my own '97 GSX.
PLEASE DO NOT MAKE THIS INTO AN ARGUEMENT ABOUT HOW THE JDM ENGINE IS THE SAME AS A US SIX BOLT. I KNOW THIS ALREADY AND IT IS CURRENTLY UNAVAILIBLE TO ME FOR PURCHASE.
Currently the list of things that I'd swap out off the 2G motor comes to this:
** Note: I'm curious on this point because typically the Garret blend turbo's aren't installed on 1st gens. Is it the oil lines/water lines? If so, I can always Aeroquip those. Or is it the IC Piping (I'll be retaining my stock 2G IC and piping). Input on this would be appreciated.
Things that I would be doing while the engine is out of the car:
After all installed and whatnot, and hopefully running, I'd do a full synthetic install and then drain, rechanging the oil and plugs after doing a MCCC treatment.
And finally some misc. crap that I've read/thought of..
GVR4 motors are setup for an external oil cooler. I'd like to know if anyone's kept this option and have installed an external oil cooler with a VR4 motor on something other than a '90. Cooler oil is ALWAYS good.
Other than doing those things, that's about it. I don't want to start digging around pulling the headgasket, or changing to '95 pistons. I need to DRIVE the car.
On a final note: I've been having trouble deciding on which vendor to get a GVR4 motor and Tranny. I need a GOOD MOTOR and tranny that will hook up to a DSM rear end, from someone who can provide compression checks, mileage (not as important, but would be nice), and status (like they can look under the valve cover and tell me how it looks under there). I really don't want to just end up with something that I've already got.
Thanks guys.

Currently the list of things that I'd swap out off the 2G motor comes to this:
- 2G Exhaust manifold (would be ported upon removal)
- Water pump (I had a new one installed last year. Might as well)
- My AGP "big T28" with ported O2 housing installation ** (See note at the bottom)
- 2G Throttle body port matched to the JDM Intake manifold. (For ease of use, I'm just going to stick with the cyclone and but not make use of the hoses and all that crap. At some point I may put on a sheet metal intake just for shits and giggles)
- Coil pack (I heard these like to get damaged)
- My ACT2600 with fresh disc on a machined for the ACT Spec sixbolt flywheel.
- Stock Accordion 2G Turbo intake and MAS would be retained.
- Any other recommendations would be appreciated! Should I change over my newer Clutch slave cylinder to the new tranny? I'm kind of lost as to what to do about electronics to put on the newer motor.

Things that I would be doing while the engine is out of the car:
- New Timing belt and accessory belts. Maybe get one of those Power brand "super strong belts", or maybe not.
- Removal of balance shafts. Don't need those throwing up on me.
- All fluids will be drained and replaced with their proper fluids
- Removal of AC, lines, belt.
- Removal of cruise control.
- Anything else?
