ok i know this is in the wrong section, but no one goes in the tranmision part. besides this is a performance question, its all about going faster .

so anyway, how much does it take to replace a auto trans with a manual one, becasue there is a gsx for sale but is auto. like how much money and work. i have an idea of it, does all it take is just to buy a manual trans, and links(pedals cables ect) and install it?

who has done this?

I'm not sure, but the holes in the firewall might not be cut already if the car came with an automatic. Also the computer will be a hair different (I think) due to it use to be controlling the tranny. Otherwise, I don't think there is anything else...

Its not as easy as you think, here is a list of some conflicts or things you have to buy.

clutch pedal
smaller brake pedal
new dash piece for manual
shifter and mechanism and cables
clutch assembly (pressure plate, disk, flywheel)
clutch slave/master cylinder
since its a gsx, you have to change the rear diff because the gear ratio is different
oh yeah, there is a bearing or some kind of sleeve that is in the crank that you have to remove


basically, it would be way cheaper to build up the auto tranny and make it fast

Yup triple digit hit it on the nail. It's not worth the time or the money to do. If you want a M/T buy a M/T, don't ruin a perfectly good A/T because you have a complex. Jesus this question is getting old. Sorry for the rant, but I'm tired of people thinking a A/T isn't fast.

Seriously, i perfer manual transmissions due to the fact that i have more control over the car and they are a little easier to work on. You can make auto trannies fast and have much less strain on your drivetrain as well. My friend has a 97gsx auto with a 16g and a tranny built by level10 and he is almost into the 12's, just a little more tuning. Also, another guy comes to mind with a 91tsi awd auto on stock internals with a Mutt ETE-42 running a 7.1@99 or something in the 1/8th which is like an 11 flat in the 1/4. Lesson learned today, dont hate on autos and try to make one a standard.

but anyway, there is no way i would ever go w/ a a/t then. b/c with a manual u are actually driving the car, not just sitting there. thanks all, guess that gxs is out.

check out my other post under tranny problems somewhere on this site. I have an auto tranny FWD. to this day people ive known since the day ive got the car still think its a 5 speed. I've caused many people to start to beleive in automatics. AN automatic just kicked that 5speeds ass. Keep in mind that in an automatic boost stays constant..there is no drop in pressure between shifts! Check out Protechtransmissions.com..this is who did my work. took almost a sec off my 1/4 mile.

Hey runuover2, your form Kansas. Have you foudn the Kansas DSM board yet? If not check out my profile, there is a link to it. Also what a;ll do you have doen to your tranny? I currently have a Translab Shift kit(black spring) and an Alto End Clutch kit. I'm still waiting on my TC to get back from Dunrite, I had problems with Protorque with my original TC.

yeha but i personally cant take it, i would take 5spd over that speed anyday, actually i would never consider a auto, thx anyway
