I know that their is a ton of threads on this but i was looking for some fresh input.
i have a 98 gsx that blew the motor, currently i am looking at a fully rebuilt EVO III w/big 16G turbo, or a Magnus Stage II 6 Bolt.
I have multipul concerns, w/the EVO III the chance of Crank walk is still their, but if the engine is well maintained and nothing added to help create CW (ACT2600) is it less likely to walk than the DSMUS 7bolt.
With the 6 bolt i am concerned w/install, i know that all that needs to be done is trim one of the motor mounts to clear the H2O pump and relocate a power transistor. But a Mitsu.dealer has the car because they are going to be splitting the cost of labor, do you think that they could do the 6 bolt swap with out any major foulups? I know many people who have had work their and i have been told that they are compentent. Also i am using this car as my everyday car as well as taking it to the track so i need reliability, the 6 bolt is a racing motor but how does it handle the everyday driving?
I would realy like some insight of people have either of the engines in right know.
thanks,
one stressed DSM'er

I was in the same position once. But I didnt want anymore 7-bolt ass problems, so i decided to go 6-bolt.

My opinion is u should go 6-bolt. Im pretty sure if u print the procedures from magnuses website the Satan workers can probably handle it. They will do it as long as u pay them good $$$$.

My 2psi on the subject...

for about the price (maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less) of a used Evo motor (that you dont know how good or bad it was treated and with who knows how many 'hard' miles) you can have a rebuilt 6bolt with forged internals.

By going the 'rebuild a 6bolt' route, you know the engine is new and you know what is in it. When it comes down to it, it is essentially do you want to pay $1500 for a used motor or $1500 for a stronger new motor?

The EVO III will be a rebuilt motor. Other wise your right it's no question go w/ the 6 bolt swap.

Wait! A rebuilt first gen 6 bolt with forged internals is only $1500? I never looked, but that sounds way cheap.

I looked all over (local and internet) for a quality rebuilt 6-bolt, and the cheapest I saw was $2500. And that was with sending back the core, which you obviously can't do.

it doesn't really cost alot more for a "built block". YOu can get ross's swinging on eagles for $750-$800. doing that you also save machine shop costs for reconditioning rods, pressing pistons on rods, machining rods(if you are doing 2gpistons on big rods). You save because the ross/eagle setup will be floating set up instead of press fit. that price is with rings as well.

I'm getting a 6 bolt machined right now. for $1150 i'm getting the above combo, plus cleaning, magging crank/block, boring .020, honing, new freeze plugs, chase all threads, yadda, yadda. this is at a GOOD machine shop as well.

i see no reason to do the 2g pistons on big rods anymore, fiscally it makes NO sense. you should at least do ross's on the big rods.

I agree with chris. I did the same swap. I wound up spendin about 200 more than it would have cost for 2g piston combo. I spend 725 on teh rods and pistons and about 700 on machine work assembly and ARP hardware. Well worth it. 10k miles on it now and still holding fine with perfect compression.
