Okay, call me lazy. Instead of cutting out the air can, I just took the entire air can off, so the air filter is just sitting there in the open. The filter and intake aren't bolted on to anything, so it's not the most secure and can move around a little. Does anyone see a problem with this?

Yeah, look at the bottom of your filter after a while, it'll be all mashed where it hits when you go over bumps, etc.

I've seen it first hand when it's not attached to something, and the filter gets pretty banged-up. I'd just cut the can down into a retaining-ring, like I did:

As you can see, it is open as can be, and the filter is still supported. I did cut the bracket that mounted to the UIC pipe, but the bottom two are still there.

All that and the clips will not hold the filter on securly all the way around and it will alow air to seep past the filter so your chance of getting dirt in your system is a lot higher.

I have found some cars with gaps as large as 1 inch from moving around in there with no can on them.

mike9146, considering Buschur still uses the stock ECU, you don't sound like you know what you're talking about.

The only downside to cutting the can is an increase in intake temperature, due to ingesting the hot under-hood air. But, the general concensus is that it is a good thing to do, rather than trying to suck all the air through the tiny snorkel thing.

There are also many websites out there that give methods for constructing a hot-air barrier, or a cold air "scoop" to direct fresh, outside air to the filter.

If you plan on drag racing, with the cut can, you can remove the passenger headlight, and have a direct, straight path for cold outside air to get to the filter.
