is there anything differnt or better on the galant vr4 then a 1g or 2g gsx. I am talking drivetrain/suspension/engine wise.

I know the Vr4 has all wheel steering, and the battery & intake are situated in differnt spots. But I am not sure about anything else.

I am asking cause I have a chance to get a 91 VR4 for $4k and before I start modding I wanted to know if I can replace parts from 1g or 2g. Like how the 2g exhaust manifold is better then 1g, and the throttle body elbow and how some people with 1g also upgrade to a 2g MAS

The VR-4 has a taller 1st gear. Other than that as far as being better it is very cool to smoke mustangs with 3 buddies in the car. hehehe If you can get one for 4K just make sure the tranny shifts well and ask if the "caps" have been changed. That is a great price for one in my opinion.

all of your engine parts and transmission parts will interchange... IE: 2g manifolds or intake elbows and you can even chunk a TEL tranny in if you blow yours or replace G-vr4 gears (say you eat up 2nd gear...) with eclipse ones. the rear end shouldnt swap out (the center pumpkin MAY...) everything suspension wise wont work. dataloggers and such should work to some degree. Karmen vortex hacking will work. etc etc.

The ouput shafts and drive axle splines all match up between the cars, but im not sure if the lengths are correct for swapping.

any other ?s, give us specifics.

Drivetrain is basically the same. The driveshaft is a bit longer, tranny has taller 1st gear, rear end only came in non-LSD 3 bolt variety (specific to GVR4 because it has power steering pump). 4 bolt rear end (with or with out LSD) is a direct bolt in, but you will have to ditch AWS (well, you could make it work with 4 bolt pumpkin, but not worth it IMHO).

Suspension is also virtually the same. Front struts have different spring mounting points and spring lengths are different from DSMs. But you can’t get GVR4 upgraded struts, so you will have to use DSM struts, when you do this spring selection gets tricky and using coilover becomes more cost efficient than in DSMs.

Engine is IDENTICAL!

>I know the Vr4 has all wheel steering,

That AWS system SUCKS! Most GVR4 enthusiast disable it…

That is a pretty good price depending on car’s condition. Unlike 1Gs (which have galvanized bodies), GVR4’s tend to rust much more :(. So watch out for that.

Also, GVR4’s have 4 lug hubs, so DSM wheels do not work on them. Keep this in mind if you are planning on re-using DSM wheels. I actually converted my first GVR4 to DSM’s 5 lug hubs, but that is a lot of work.

wow thanks for all the info, the owner has sent me a carfax and history of the car and its in great shape. no dents or dings, no visable body rust and its my fav car color too, white.

Everybody seems to have hit most of the really important points on the GVR-4. To add about the tranny the input shaft is also stronger than the TEL as well...plus of course the taller 1st gear too. The GVR-4's were all built in Japan so the build quality of them is notably better than DSM's too. Your intake choices may be limited though as the intake & battery are located differently than on DSM's, but you can always use a small battey like an Odyssey or just relocate it to the trunk. Just check all the same things that you would on a DSM when looking at it & you should be able to spot any problems. $4k doesn't sound like too bad of a deal as long as it's in relatively good shape.

No, not really. This was mostly a marketing gimmick, which Mitsu did not even push very hard. To be perfectly honest with you, I could not feel it one way or another. Most people get rid of it when they go to 4 bolt rear end or when the system develops a leak.

GVR4 AWS system is pretty crude. They used oversized control arm bushings (which extra deflection ability) to get extra movement out of the control arms (so there are no extra ball joints of any kind). I guess it works OK.

The problem is that 1G DSM’s have the same rear control arms as GVR4, but no AWS. That leaves our rear end very soft and prone to deflection under hard handling and launching stresses. In other words, we inherited that “feature” without whatever benefit that AWS could have delivered. Sucks to be us :(.

$4K!!!!! BUY IT YESTERDAY!!! I bought my GVR4 from some lady who had no idea what it was (she put a down payment on a slightly used lexus GS300 w/ the money i gave her.... i think she down graded:D ) I paid 4200 and it had something like 96000. it was the best 4200 i ever spent and i will never sell this car. I plan on aquiring as many as i can when i get more cash (the wife agreed to drive one woohoo!!!). Even though it's been in the garage torn up for 8 months there isn't a day that goes buy that i don't think about raping some mustang or camaro in my four door family car.
on a side note, if you live in snowy areas, it's an amazingly capable car. the wheelbase is around 18 longer than a 1G which makes it more stable in the slippery conditions (my opinion of course as i am not a rocket scientist)
Sorry for the long post but I think GVR4's are the greatest performance/luxury (look at the door panels...SUEDE!)/economical car ever made.

The thing with the AWS is that it only activates above 30mph (I think) & the rear wheels only turn in the same direction as the front wheels. I think it makes the steering feel vague & like the car is floating when you're changing lanes. Time to upgrade to a 4-bolt :D
