I was wondering if anyone knows how much a ported out manifold and O2 housing flows compared to a new upgrade manifold or O2??? I am going to put a 3" exhaust on this summer and if i'm not going to get any noticable difference on a new mani or O2 i'm just going to get them ported out. So I guess what I'm asking is what kinda horsepower will I be able to get with a ported mani and O2 compared to new higher flowing.....any input???

many fast cars are running with a ported 2g manifold.
that should say something.
it matters, every bit matters.

If you're planning on instaling a 3" DP with that exhaust, then the ported O2 housing is not going to MAKE horsepower, but it will keep you from boost creep.

Too much boost creep makes you run too lean. Too lean for too long and things melt. That's how my first engine ended up looking like this:

Porting the exhaust manifold will create less back-pressure, which is a good thing. and it will cause the turbo to spool quicker. but if you have a 14b or T25, it's not going to spool much quicker than it already does.

Here's my porting job:

I called up mike at slowboy. He said that port work is fine unless you are getting into really high Hp. I guess that cars have gone in the low 11's with a ported mani and O2

there are many cheap alternatives to ported o2 housings.
especially if you are paying someone to do it for you.
get a tubular 02 downpipe from RNR for like $330
beats the hell out of a ported 02.

I don't know how you can say that is a cheap alternative. I paid 25 shipped for my 2g O2 and 100shipped for my 2g manifold. I did the port work myself and I think I improved flow considerably. I don't charge that much for the porting I do(30 for O2, 50 for mani.), but I am starting to use my dad's machine shop and we are making some mounts for the milling machines so I can improve on quality and speed at the same time over hand porting. The big thing is making sure that everything matches up size-wise at your connections. I also use some fine polishing tools to put a reflective finish on everything.

if you want your car running you must buy a spare.
then you have to pay for shipping. then you have to ship it to you, and then pay to get it done, then pay to get it shipped back.

versus spending an extra 100 dollars when getting a 3" dp and making it one unit from RnR

Or you could buy a porting bit for $25 and an electric drill for $40 and do the work yourself. Even if you're slow you can remove, port, and replace the manifold in a weekend. Next weekend do the O2 housing and turbine housing. Or to save even more time you can port out the bottom of the O2 housing with it still on the car. The bottom is the narrowest part of the O2 anyway, plus you can match the size to the DP. Just remove the downpipe, lay on your back, and go to it.

if you have access to a die grinder and some carbide bits you might just wanna do it your self its really easy you just gotta make sure you dont go to far and mess shit up. hit up www.vfaq.com to get some ideas on how much material you should take out of everything. And if you dont have acces to the stuff to do so, im sure that you can get all the parts you want done for under 150bux.:dsm:

yes that is an alternative.
however, i stated IF they wanted to have someone else do it.
which many do.

If you buy just one $25 bit and the drill you are going to get what you pay for. These things are not the easiest piece of metal to work with since they are cast in sand. If you don't know what you are doing and have never worked with this type of metal before, you're going to end up with a sloppy job that took you way longer than planned. I admit that with shipping things can get a little pricey, but which is more expensive, sending it away or having to buy another one if you mess up?

ok guys thanks for the info. I think I am just going to have the guys at slowboy do the port work for me. They are only about an hour or two from me so I can take a nice drive swap the ported ones for mine and no shipping with little down time. I never thought about getting an O2 replacing dp I'll look into that. Thanks again everyone.

Cool. The guys at Slowboy are awesome. I was up talking with them before I started doing the porting on my O2 and Mike showed me exactly what they do. Since I'm spoiled and have access to a machine shop I did it myself and it came out awesome. One of these days I have to make it back up there so I can get my CV boots fixed.
