Im rebuilding my 1g, and I hear people talking about 95 pistons in a 1g, but ive never herd anyone talking about why? So if someone could tell me if its worth the money to have my rods worked over to fit. thanks

the reason they suggest it is because the compression ratio is higher(8.5:1) which will give you more power, and they are strong enough for something like 400 HP, and they are cheaper than aftermarket pistons(200-250 dollars I think), you just have to get your rods machined for them(100 dollars or so machining cost) besides, most aftermarket pistons seem to come in the standard 9:1 compression ratio and people are nervous running compression that high on a turbo

I almost ran 9.5:1 compression. I have 9.0:1 instead just incase I deside to ever spray.

400hp? the factory 2G small rod bottom end is good for 400hp, as is the lower compression pistons 1G big rod bottom end, using 2G pistons on 1G rods is good to an easy 500 whp....and you get the compression bump (for you 1G guys), since not many of us are going to be going over 500 whp, i'd say its a pretty damn good way to go, inexpensive too, all ya gotta do is pay for a little bit of machine work

well for me there is only one machine shop around and he has little experiance to my knowlage of doing that sorta thing so im just gona buy somt 8.5:1's that already fit....

Go here http://hometown.aol.com/rcm1061/myhomepage/auto.html print out this page and bring it to any good machine shop and you shouldn't have any trouble fitting 2G pistons on 1G rods. Lots of guys have done it.

in general, how much of a horsepower gain are we talking about? is the power throughout the entire powerband or does it help top end ect.? im kinda new to engine internals.

Yes it helps in every aspect. It was noticable in my setup, and others have noted better spool up ...etc other than that its really nothing dramatic. Just make sure that a proper machine shop does your work...

how long did it take you to install the pistons? im assuming you had to take the head off and the oil pan? its probably going to be a job for a seasoned mechanic i guess?

Mine was machined and horribly at that. The pistons actually never sat right, ans this is why I say go to someone you trust. But if you really dont want to remove the block you can just drop from oil pan...

ok, last question.......is this a worthwhile upgrade for a stock turbo? should i invest in a bigger turbo before i start getting into internals? thanks man!

WHy are you asking me these things. Its up to you! I hate when people pawn this stuff to others, do what you want man not what anyone tells you. If MY motor was in "NEED" of a rebuild thats what I woudl do. If not then leave it the way it is until somethign happens. You wont really notice much unless you already have mods done. I hade 16g and full supporting mods when I did it to mine so I noticed a little spool up and power gain. But why spend the money?

its not like im basing my decision tottaly on what you tell me to do. im just getting bits of info and adding them all up, thats. thanks for the info.

I wouldn't break into my motor unless I had to. In my case, I did. Dropped a valve and ventilated the piston and head. I figured that would be a good time to upgrade. (I made that VFAQ because I had a hard time finding the info and getting consistent answers.)

But like CANDELA said you gotta do your own thing. We don't know your budget, your abilities, your goals, your passion for DSMs, or your tolerance for repeated repairs! :D

Do all the free mods first then get into some simple bolt-ons and then get into the engine and the complex stuff.....If your wallet, your skills, your desire, and your service manual is up to it!!! :thumb:

well, i understand what you guys are saying. i was just wondering if i would feel a big improvment with the pistons. like asking somone if they should get a 700$ intake on a stock car or should they take that 700$ and put it into exhaust. same thing....kinda, not very well thought but anyways, i appreciate the info.

All right, that's better. We like helping people who understand.:D

If you did pistons only you'd only see a small gain and mostly off boost.

With your mods you would be better off with other bolt-ons unless you NEED to disassemble your engine. Looks like you could still use a boost controller and gauges, an AFC, IC pipes and 2G TB elbow, maybe a good clutch.

Be sure your timing belt and tensioner are in good shape or you'll HAVE to remove the head soon! :barf:
