I guess in Nor cal, they are crackin down on modified exhaust systems. i got pulled over and givin a ticket for my exhaust. a few of my friends have gotten pulled over for the same reason too, that same week. I have a apexi n1, i was thinking of cutting off the mufuler and welding a universal muffuler that looks stock on to the n1 piping to make it stelth mode. what do u guys think? would that work and sound okay?

Those tickets are bullshit man, they have no equipment to measure exactly what the db is so the judge will drop the charges once you get into court. When this happened to me last year I just put the silencer on, got it to pass smog and then talked to the judge.

Hopefully you'll have the same outcome.

Yeah, unless they actually measured the decible level, the judge will drop it. The best way to fight it, and not have to actually go to court, is to fight it through the mail. I am fighting a smog ticket, for illegal modification (Air Filter) which is legal through the mail.

Here is a great website to help you out...

Good Luck

the code is 27151, he said it wanst too loud, he said its illgal to have an aftermarket exhaust which i think is bull. He told me i had to go to the chp to get a db reading on it in order to get it signed off. Im going to find a way to get around that.

Modification of Exhaust Systems

27151. (a) No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor of the vehicle so that the vehicle is not in compliance with the provisions of Section 27150 or exceeds the noise limits established for the type of vehicle in Article 2.5 (commencing with Section 27200). No person shall operate a motor vehicle with an exhaust system so modified.

(b) For the purposes of exhaust systems installed on motor vehicles with a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating of less than 6,000 pounds, other than motorcycles, a sound level of 95 dbA or less, when tested in accordance with Society of Automotive Engineers Standard J1169 May 1998, complies with this section. Motor vehicle exhaust systems or parts thereof include, but are not limited to, nonoriginal exhaust equipment.

Oh? Was the cop carrying a dB meter? Is he certified in its use in measuring dB? Or did he just "think" it was too loud?
I can't find the SAE standard right off, because they want some $60 for it from their site. However, if you go to the CHP, or better yet, whatever agency issued the citation, they would be required to provide you with the standard at no cost.

Also, the officer can not give you a ticket without proving your car is out of compliance with the 95 decible level. Remember, you are innocent until proven guilty. Take it to court, and have the cop prove tha it is above 95 decibles.

If you want to be a dick to the cop, and just make him look stupid, and you have the time to do it. Actually go to court. And when the Cop is on the stand, ask him, "Did you take a decible reading?" When he says "No," then just say... "OHHHHH, so you know exactly what 95 decibles sounds like," and then tear into him about making assumptions and giving tickets based on assumptions and not facts.

If cops were could give tickets and arrest people on assumptions, then this world would be pretty bad..

The best way to handle any police officer is with a polite schooling after testing the waters:

1. When the cop tells you he pulled you over because you have a modified exhaust simply inform the officer that yur exhaust system is in compliance due to the 95 dba rule

2. 9 times out of 10 the officer will show you the shorthand of 27151 which they carry with them and simply reads "No modification to an exhaust system to amplify noise is permitted". By now you have opened the lines of communication and should know if you are dealing with a person or a dick. If you are dealing with a person, and he continues to feel that your exhaust is in violation, ask him if he is aware of CHP bulletin 98-100. (By the way this is a bulletin that ALL tuners in CA should carry in their glovebox and is available at http://www.greddy.com/CHPnoisepolicies.html) If the officer is not aware of this bulletin and you have it it is a good idea to offer to furnish it. Like I said If you are dealing with a person this should be an accepted proposal. I have driven away from 7-8 tickets this way. If the ticket is still written venture off to your nearest CHP office and they will test it and pass it, grante it is a test that isn't done scientifically, it does get the job done. (The officer asks you what RPM you are at when doing 70 MPH on the freeway, once you state it he tells you to put it in neutral at that RPM and stands about 15 feet back and listens. I have heard of only one person failing this test and it was with a Tanabe Racing Medallion w/o silencer on a turbo B18C1 (Integra GSR)

MOST IMPORTANTLY If you are dealing with a dick realize that the officer can be a lot more trouble for you than you are for them, after all they get paid to go to court, you don't. It also gives them good reason to look out for you later.

Hope that helps

Thanks, Im going to try to school this guy. i'll let eveyone know what happens

If he thinks he knows what 95db sounds like, ask him to make a 95db noise with his mouth so the courtroom can see what he considers to be louder than 95db. Obviously he will object to making himself look like a moron by making car noises. If he can't replicate what 95db sounds like how exactly can he tell what it is anywhere else?

"vrooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmm" :laugh:

Just for the archives. When I got this BS ticket and wasted a day going to the CHP office, I learned that they dont have any equipment to measure exhaust DB! Hope all goes well man.

i received two modified exhaust tickets in the same week.

the quickest and easiest way to resolve this is to just pay.

go to the CHP, never go to sherrif's stations. from my experience, sherrifs have been dicks, and they charge you $15 for the certificate you need, while the CHP officers [still dicks] will do it for free.

go to the court clerk, and tell him/her that you wanted to contest the violation. have her/him set a date so you'd be able to speak to judge.

on your court date, be early, and when the judge asks you to enter your plea, plead guilty. politely inform the judge that you have corrected the violation. hand him your ticket.

usually, and it has always happened to me, the judge will dismiss the violation, and charge you a $10 "court cost." [a fee for wasting the court's time.]

pay 10 bucks, get it over and done with.

hope this helps
goodluck
