i am lookink to upgrade my 95 talon tsi intake/exhaust system but i cannot find a cold air intake that will fit a turbo talon. Is there a reason why they dont make them and why no body really ever puts them on their car i see alot of people with normal intakes or short ram intakes...If ne one knows where to get a turbo cold air intake tell me....thanks

You probably cant find one because they dont make one. Its too crammed in the engine bay to route piping down. Also with the stock SMIC, there is no room in the fenderwall. If u have an FMIC, u might be able to make ur own. Has to be custom though.

If you have an FMIC you can make your own.

Or if you get a VPC for fuel control Buschur makes a cold-air intake for use with the VPC.

Doesn't the IC charge the air enough? I was under the impression that with an IC you don't really need a cold air intake. If I'm wrong correct me, thanks

the colder the air the better. you can do a cai if you have a frontmount otherwise there's just not enough room. lots of people do the airdam to block the intake from all the hot underhood air.

I have a heat shield that mounts between the filter and the MAS that blocks the hot air from the engine. It made a considerably noticeable difference.

That's what I meant by the air dam. I just didn't explain what it was.

What'd you guys make the heat shield out of? I'm looking to make one this weekend, and need some tips. Pics are nice too.

Sorry for hi-jacking your thread, but there is no point in making a new one.

there are instructions at vfaq.com people have made them out of all kinds of different materials like rubber, metal, and other randoms stuff.

jdmawd - does that fit in there if u still have the stock sidemount?

DrZiplok - you just make your own out of whatever materials you have. I've never seen one for sale, but that doesn't mean they aren't out there.

The only way I can validate these results is my peak karma readings on my S-AFC went up from 1450 to 1650. I could definately feel a noticeable increase in power also.

I made a cold air intake for my FMIC equiped car for about 10 bucks, and its very slick. Rather than explain it, here are pics. Ok I can only find one, top view:

[edit] That plate covers the massive hole where the Supra SMIC used to sit :)

The filter sits right over this hole. The tubing is very rigid aluminum ducting in the HVAC section at Home Depot/Lowes, not flimsy dryer vent. It makes a simple curve to the front of the car, where a 4" to 6" adapter acts like a big scoop, and is the right size to attach (airtight) to the opening in the bumper that the SMIC ducting used to attach to.

With no block off plate/air dam whatever you call it, I noticed these results. On a 25 degree day, my intake temps dropped from 97 degrees, to 30-35. So about 60 degree reduction. Now the problem with turbo cars, and this was mentioned above, is that we have intercoolers. The more efficient the IC is, the less a cold air intake will help! And with the less efficient SMICs, there is no room for this mod. I just did it because it was a fun project, looks extremely slick, was only 10 bucks max, and cant hurt :) With a block off it would be able to get temps down to ambient.

Here are some numbers for the math geeks.

If inlet temp is 95 degrees, pressure is 14.5, boost is 22 psi, turbo efficiency is 75%, and ambient temp is 25 degree (as in my example above) turbo output temp is 316 degrees. If the IC is 80% efficiecnt and pressure drop is 1 psi, intake temp is now 83 degrees.

Lets use the "after" example now. Same conditions, except that the intake temp has dropped that 60 degrees to 35. Turbo outlet temp is now 232 degrees (nice drop!), but IC outlet temp is 66 degrees. So the actual drop is only 17 degrees. Not bad, but not as big as it initially appears ;)

On a warmer day ther result should be even less. Lets see. Same conditions except 80 degree day, 110 inlet temps is 131 degrees at the motor. If we get intake temps to ambient, its 124. So only a 7 degree actual drop for a 30 degree intake drop. ;)

So I think its worth it for the 10 bucks, but thats as far as I'd go ;)

If you honestly believe that a heat shield is going to make your turbo pull approximately 15% more air, then I got some land to sell you. Get your head on your shoulders man! Why would a piece of metal surrounding the air filter increase flow? If anything, it would restrict overall airflow!

This mod can't hurt, and is cheap. It is maybe worth it for the money. It probably helps out a little bit, but by no means should anyone expect any noticible power increase, because you simply won't get it. Don't believe everything you read.

Actually I'll go with it. Cold air is more dense than hot air, plus if you remove the stock air box and put up a wall you are forcing the air that enters where the air box was to stay in the area of the filter.
