Ok I need to do the timming belt as i found a chunk missing today but while I am at it i am gonna yank the Balence shafts too. My question is is there enough room to beat the front balence bearings out with the engine still in? I kinda want to put in the block off bearings instead of putting the shaft back in there to cover the oil pasages cause i have 173K on the motor now and besides its just a better way to do it. Also if there is enough room is there any special tool i can make to beat them out easyer or any tips. I would yank the engine but i dont have my cherry picker right now and dont really want to pull the engine. Thanks:thumb:

Since you have to lower the engine to remove the upper BS you will also have room to use the tool to remove and install the bearings. I just left the upper shaft in but I guess it might be possable to tap them out from the inside of the block since you also have the oil pan off to remove the lower BS. It would depend on how tight they are in the block cause there's not much room by the rear bearing to swing a hammer.

Hmm i have a big slide hammer to yank them out but that rear bearing is gonna be a pain if there is not enough room. gess i will find out soon. :)

I ment there isn't much room on the inside of the block to fit a socket and hammer inside. Wouldn't you still use the slide hammer from the front of the block to pull it?

Steve

yess the slide hammer i have is perty long so it would be out in front of the block the only room issew is the slide hammer arms sttick out perty far. But from the looks of things i may have enough room.;) I will find out here in a few hours. :)

I've done it before but is no fun. It took about 4 to 5 hours on a lift with air tools. You do not need a slide hammer to get them out. The front one comes right out. For the rear one just flip the balance shaft around and knock the bearing out. To reinstall the bearing use trans gel or thick grease and stick it on the balance shaft (the end that you used to knock it out) and tap it back in.

Ok car is completly apart. I had no trouble at all droping it down for clearance except for one thing. Take the AC compressor loose. ;) after i got that loose i had plenty of room to work. Got the bearings out no prob too using the BS as a drift. :D Parts should be in tomorrow and i will have it back together tomorrow hopfully. that is if i can ever get all the gasket cleaned off.

Cool i got everything back together. and Steve i went and got one of those bits.;) works good. no leaks or nothing. Well except for the turbo oil drain tube:rolleyes: I think there made to leak.:shhh:

One tidbit I learned a little while ago about the oil return line. There are crush washers under the bolts on the pan. They seal them from leaking. They are not shown in the manual but I found them in CAPS once someone pointed out they were there.

What sort of problem are you having?
How are you trying to put it in?

Steve

I haven't pulled the upper shaft but I thought the front bearing surface on the shaft was bigger than the rear and that's how one got the rear out without using a puller. So are you saying the larger end now just slides through?

If you still have the oil pan off you can try reaching up into the block from below and gently tap the bearing into the bore to block the oil passage.

Steve

it was a pain to get the rear bearing in for me too. what i did was put a long extension in the wrong side of a socket, and then i tapped the bearing in that way. i had to first seat the bearing a little, and i did that with a socket i had that had a taper on the outside.

ok guys, I'm having problems with my bearing removal, I could use some ideas. the balance shaft (front) came completely out, right through the outer bearing. I tried using the b.shaft to beat it out, but it just ends up slipping and going back through the bearing. I've since tried sockets, screwdrivers, and 2 or 3 others tools laying around but that s.o.b. won't come out. I haven't even tried the inner bearing yet.

i'm having the exact same problem right now , if you get it out tell me how ;)
