i read that the late (93-94) 4G63 turbos used lighter, weaker rods then the early 6-bolt motors rods. I'm about to do an engine rebuild and i can get some early 1G rods to replace the one on my 93 TSi.

Will the rods from the 6 bolt motor fit the 7 bolt? I'm getting JE pistons and i need to know weather to order them for the 6 bolt of 7 bolt- all depends on if the rods are interchangable.

Thanks in Advance,
Daniel

6bolt rods wont fit in a 7bolt. Find urself a 6bolt shortblock and go from there.

Don't rebuild the motor unless there is a serious problem. No the rods won't fit without machine work.

so the cranks are different?
I don't have the money for a 6bolt shortblock. I just want something that can take a little more- so i thought some early Big rods will work.
Didn't they use big rods on the 92 7 bolt??

What kind of machine work to make them fit are we talking about here?

I dont want to hijack the thread here, but i wouldnt want to start a new one for such a small question....

Shot peening stock rods...Stronger than before or weaker than before?

ah, and TTT :p

Basically the big end needs to be narrowed for the 7-bolt crank. I thought I had seen the dimension on-line, but I was not able to find it after searching.

I did, however, find a vendor on-line that listed "narrowing of big end of 6-bolt rods for 7-bolt crank" for a bit over $100.

As has been mentioned in some other threads here, by the time you machine the big rods to fit the crank and also to fit the '95 pistons (if you are doing this), they are getting close to the cost of some aftermarket rods.

[Edit - I just realized you were not going with 95 pistons, so disregard the previous paragraph]

Finally (just in case someone is searching on 'rods' - I realize this is not directly applicable to your case) the VFAQ site has a link on how to machine the big rods to fit the '95 pistons.
