Hi Guys,

I am in the process of building up a 6-bolt block for my 92GSX,
and I have a few questions. I will list the things that are being
done to the block and then ask my questions:

Ross Racing pistons 8.5:1 compression ration
Eagle Rods
ARP Head Studs
ARP Main Studs
Mitsubishi 4-Layer Headgasket
Balancer Shaft Eliminator Kit
New Frontcase cover welded for BS Kit
Turbotrix SS Intake & Exhaust Valves (1mm over)
Moroso Oilpan
Crower Springs & Ti Retainers
Upgraded Lifters
HKS 264/264 Cams
New Belts, pulleys and tensioners
Lightly ported head. Portmatched to a EVO III mani & stock Intake Mani

The questions that I have are:

The Gap & Clearance. Ross suggested 5 thousands, but that seems
huge, and I do not want my engine to sound like a diesel. Do you
thing 4 thousands will be OK? If any of you have a similar setup,
what did you use?

The other question that I have is a turbo. I want to drive my car
every day. I do not want a trailer queen. I do not mid lag, but I
do not want to beat the hell out of my car to get some power.
I was thinking of getting a Buchur 20G. What would you guys
recommend. I don't really care who makes it, I want to have fun
with my car every day.

Any comments/suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank You

If ROSS says 5 thousandths then go with 5 thousandths! That is .005 of an inch. Not very big at all, thinner than a sheet of paper.

in regards to the turbo.. we need more info then you want to have a streetable car. I can tell you to get anything from a 14b to a FP Red :)

How much power do you want to make?

Pump or Race gas?

How much boost do you intend on running?

Whats accceptable spool to you?

ETC ETC ETC :)

Larry,

Here is the full list of mods. Some of the parts are
on the car, some at the shop that is building my engine
others are in my kitchen awaiting install. The idea is
to have the car up and running by mid-summer.
The best gas I can get in the small town
I live is 93. My plan is not to exceed 18-19psi of boost on
pump gas on the street. Racegas ... well whatever boost it can
take before is starts knocking ... 24++ psi ????
How much power do I want out of the car. Say about 350 at the wheels
on the street and around 400 on racegas on the track.

Ohh, I forgot to answer your question about acceptable spool.
Well I am thinking about 3500-3700 ... somewhere in that
neighbourhood. But not 4000rpms.

I do not wanna go overboard and spend thousands, but as you can
see from the rest of my installed/planned mods, I wanna do everything
on this car right. If it means wait and save money, well .... that's OK.
To make the long story short .... up to $1500 would be OK.

My dilemma comes from the fact that most combinarions end
up being about the same price. And when you spend a ton of
money on a DSM 300-400 dollars in not that big of a deal looking
at the big picture. Specifically:

Ported and Clipped 20G (TD06/TD05) $1050
Bushur O2 $220
Ported EVO3 Manifold 295
HKS Standrt $370

Total: $1935

Turbonetics Manifold/Tial 35/VP o2/T3/T4 to st3 .64 ar
from DS MOtorsports: $1900

2G Manifold from BR --> 225
AGP L2R $1400
Oil Line Kit 100
VP O2 285
Tail 40 385

Total: $2395

Green Turbo from FP with the above combo will be
about $2270

The margin is about $400 which is insane because these are
totally different combos.

If I were to go with a 20G (Full TD06) and a 38mm wastegate
it will be about the same too.

In the end when one dumps thousands on suspension/engine/drivetrain
electroncs ... etc. 400 bucks in not a big deal.

This is driving me nutz, and I cannot decide. To answer your question
about the money I am willling to spend .... well whatever it takes,
even if that means completing the project several months later,
as long as it is done right.

I think you should get the full garret setup.. Thats what I would buy right now if I had the choice and didnt have my L2R setup. I would want a T3/T4 50trim with a Stage 3 and .63AR.. the spool might be a lil laggy for you but the power would be there. If you want a faster spool and can give a lil on the top end power then opt for the .48AR..

You can get this
Includes: AGP/SFP T3 manifold, TiAL 35, dump tube, 50 trim T3/T4, 2.5" O2 housing, oil feed line, oil drain tube, gaskets, nuts, and bolts for 1725 from www.agpturbo.com

yup, 1600 bux from AGP, includes:

T3/T04E turbo 57 or 60 trim (extra 125 for the 50 trim)
SFP manifold(very nice manifold)
Tial wastegate 35mm
o2 housing and dumptube
gaskets and lines

It's what i will be getting in the next couple months, still trying to debate if i wanna spend that extra 125 for the 50 trim tho. It's probably one of the nicest kits out there, and has an excellent price. Good luck to you
