OK so my car is now in the shop because it was leaking oil and water everywhere. A very knowledgable mechanic told my father that the head gasket and water pump blew because of the excessive boost i gave my car. I only fed the car 93 octane gas and I had my boost controller set to 15 psi. You guys told me that 15 psi is fine and wouldnt hurt my engine with the supporting mods that I had. I have a K&N filter charger kit, an UIP, a 1g BOV, a MAS to turbo pipe, and free mods. I also have a MBC and a boost gauge. My question is this: Were the people that told me that I could run 15 psi safely wrong, is the mechanic wrong, or is just a fluke accident and my car is to blame. By the way, the mechanic deals with tuned cars and professional drag racers all the time so Im pretty sure he identified the problem correctly. Was my only problem that I didnt have a turbo back exhaust? Thanks for all your input! ~MAtt

15psi is fine. As long as it wasn't creeping (you do have a real boost gauge right? )

Repair shop mechanics are bumbling idiots. He is wrong, and 15 psi is perfectly same.

15 psi is more then safe. I think your head gasket was weak, caused by a nuber of things. Not the extra few PSI. But it might not of helped the situation :thumb:

I'll have to ask the same thing. Do you have an aftermarket boost gauge? and were you watching it to make sure it wasn't spiking, creeping or whatever else?

I've ran 20psi with my car w/ no head gasket problems. My engine is untouched from the valve cover to the oil pan, I only have mods that support my fuel needs, and of course exaust and all that good stuff. I also plan on turning it up to 22-23psi at the track this spring to see what it does before I put in my other engine. So i would have to say it is becasue of a weak HG and not the couple extra psi. Good luck!

Mike

15 psi is a walk in the park for these cars. Tell the mechanic it's not a b16 with turbo kit and to tell that story to someone who will listen. You do have a real boost gauge though right? If not then it's probably your fault.

i run 15psi all day. i hit full boost alot ( i abuse my car, but i always baby her with the right amount of maintenance...she likes it rough) so 15 psi may not be to blame. it may not of helped but i doubt it is to blame. it could of just been warn out.

water runs through the heads to cool them....that's why he is leaking oil and water if he blew a head gasket.

Speaking of the water pump, though, when was it replaced last? They reportedly only last about 70-80K miles. It's a good practice to replace it whenever you do the timing belt. Is it possible that if the water pump blew, it could've caused other damage?

if the water pump is shot that is the reason the head gasket went. what probably happend is the pump went out which caused your car to overheat which caused your head gasket to fail it has nothing to do with the 15 psi.

hmm. never heard of to much psi blowing a water pump. I guess it could happen though. blow the hg into a water port and cause more pressure than the seals can take? but shouldn't the rad cap open before that happens? or is your mechanic a dumb ass.
I agree with libbert2. your wp caused you to over heat and warped the head.
Oh and for future reference don't hold us responsible for things that go wrong with your car again.
