well i dont kno if you guys kno this but ill type it... my buddy the other day was due for an oil change.. he only had 20w-50 at his place so he used it well after he was down the car ran awesome he was only running 12 psi and it seriouslly felt he was running 17-18 psi.. now i kno its not just me other people have said the same thing around here that took a ride with it.. if any of you guys that have used thin oil and changed to thick oil please tell us if u feel any difference thanks

DAVE

yea his car does the same it wants to stallafter the car warms up it runs good.. u didnt feel anything out of it other then the startin thing?

I think my car does run a little better with 20W-50, but I don't think it is very noticeable.

mine ran fine once started, but it would crank alot slower and longer before it fired off.

lets all change to 20w-50

jk.. older cars run better with thicker oil because the rings are worn and can't seal well with thinner conventional oil.

his piston rings are worn :shhh:

yep, piston rings... And if it felt 40-50hp faster its a pretty bad problem... 12psi vs 16-17psi = 40-50 hp in theroy..

One of the employees at checker just about hurt me when I told him I stuck some 20w-50 in my car.

He said these motors aren't like the old school v8's which this oil is designed for. Hence my dad uses it in his supercharged 454.

He also said to take it out before I spun a bearing or worse killed my turbo. He said the oil is just to thick for the complicated oiling passeges in these motors.

Thats true, about the 20w50 not being the best oil for a DSM, but if the rings are going bye bye, then the thcker oil will help seal them, not that I'd run it in any newer car ( I did put it in my focus once b/c I bought the wrong shitt, but its just a daily driver, and under warrenty )... Your turbo(s) and bearings aren't going to like 20w50..

I say replace the rings or buy a new motor and run Mobil 1 10w30 or 5w30... If not, I'm really not sure, if you can stand knowing your boost is just going into the crankcase run 10w30, if not run 20w50 the DSM's blocks are pretty forgiving, but I don't think the turbos gonna last REALLY long. If you run 20w50, just let the car idle for a real long time before you drive it. Then again, thats IMO.. I'd say get another block.

well i didnt do it to my car my talon has 10w-40 my buddy has 20-50 ill just tell him to drain the oil and put somehtign thinner

Well I am mad now, I just changed my oil and added 3quarts 20w50 and the other 1.5 or so 10w30 because after drving in the hot weather of florida the oil thins out and my oil pressure at idle drops a little lower than I would like it to, therefore I added a little thicker oil to bring it up some. I did'nt realize there were negative affects of thicker oil. I would assume it should be ok for 3k miles, but if not let me know.

I seriously doubt that oil has any effect on performance. I'm not sure if i believe the piston ring theory either. I had massive blow-by on worn out rings and blew tons of oily smoke out my exhaust. I did not notice the slightest loss in power from the blow by. What i have noticed though is that thin and or dirty oil has a major affect on the lifters/lash adjusters. When my car is cold or the oil is very old i get loud lifter tick that sometimes wont go away for 20 minutes or more of running. This causes the computer to read the maximum amount of knock. Under these circumstances the car is a total dog with no power. I have seen dyno charts that range from 170 to 230 on back to back pulls simply because of knock/timing.

20W 50 is really thick, the maximum i would run is 15W 40. I dont know if it'll hurt anything to run stuff that thick though....it gets to -15* here at night so im sure my 10W 30 gets thicker-if only for a while-than your 20W50 down there in florida.

I've been doing an oil change at a place around here, and a guy said that local Subaru club guys switched to Redline synthtic 10W30, claiming their engines run MUCH cooler. I'm yet to try it out.

yea im better off tellin him to change cuz it gets real cold around here like below so thanks for the help

if you switch to synthetic it can cause oil leaks i guese the gasket has to be somewhat of a special kind

From what i understand..the synthetic oil doesn't cause the leaks..rather it causes some of the nast particles that have built up in your engine and have filled in the pores or gaps in you seals...to loosen . So the seals that were once sealed because of nasty stuff(i dont know what to call this...but i think you know what im talkin about) is now clean but leaking.

Dont take this to heart as i am in no way an oil expert.......this is just put together from some investigating.
